Microsoft, by way of announcing its Xbox strategy for Christmas in the UK, has revealed today that there will be no immediate axe taken to the retail price of the console before 2004.
Expectations were high following Nintendo's slashing of GameCube to £79.99 that Microsoft would follow with a price cut of its own prior to Christmas, especially since Nintendo's machine has begun to outsell the Xbox for the first time in months (2 to 1).
However, Microsoft has instead chosen to place its yuletide hopes in a bundle that features the console, Halo and Midtown Madness 3 and a voucher for two months' subscription to Xbox Live. This Xbox bundle will retail for £139.99, on shelves from today.
Industry watchers will be following Sony's, Nintendo's and Microsoft's Christmas fortunes in the UK closely, in particular the clash between GameCube and Xbox.
While Sony is in an unassailable position and likely to do very well with EyeToy this Christmas, Nintendo is looking stronger than it has for some time, sales likely to be driven further by the arrival of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! on November 14. Let the battle commence.
Hmmmm exciting.
I really didn't like the original Amped. Just my opinion, of course, but I gave it a good play and we didn't get along - so I don't think it's likely I'll be getting the second, not with all the other great games arriving. SSX 3 does look brilliant though, and I honestly don't know which will prevail out of it and 1080. I may even have to get both. EA Big games have never failed to impress me, despite what rubbish the rest of the company churns out, so SSX 3 is a sure-fire hit.
On this console appeal and playability matter, the pure fun style of Nintendo games will always keep me playing longer than anything else. An RPG can last 100 hours, but games like Mario Kart will last forever. That's what appeals to me about the GameCube.
Mario Kart is the biggest franchise released on ANY console this Christmas. And you can get it with the Gamecube for a mere £100...
Sales through the roof? I hope so.
Crimany I wanted to start a console war but not about a game I've never heard of... Counterstrike... isn't that an ancient PC game? GTA3 and Vice City has already pulled it's gamers as has Counterstrike... it'll do some damage but not as major as lets say a system selling monster like Mario Kart.
Oh and I didn't like Amped... it had nice touches but I felt it was dissapointing and I thought, i maybe wrong, that the critics agreed with me. 1080 was raved as the greatest snowboarding game ever on the N64 and was the best evidence of the genre in the last generation. Going on this i am concluding 1080 2 will be better than Amped 2 but I'm only making a guess.
And Edgy is right SSX is far more fun to play than both.
Forums seem rather tetchy tonight.
But don't you think that, given the choice, a certain amount of people will feel the same was as me or Cyclone, and so the Xbox software sales will suffer.
You can't get Mario Kart on the PC, after all.
