Broadband is finally going to be available in my town next week. I'm interested in possibly going LIVE with my X-Box but I pretty much know nothing about it.

So basically what I want to know is what kind of costs are involved and if there are any other cables/accessories I need to buy.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Excellent, no 15 pounds is worth it, putting in an ethernet card will be no hassle at all. I use Windows ME at the moment so that's no trouble at all. I canceled the order and will purchase this now. ^_^ When you say wireless, does that mean the router is free from cables to the phoneline or no need for cables from router to said pcs and consoles.

Excellent that's that nearly sorted out, just a few questions and a card to get and I'm done. Thanks again biggles, your help is extremely appreciated and apologises for spamming the thread, my bad >_<

Yes it would do. But you would need an ethernet card in the PC. Not difficult though, they cost around £10 at most. You open the case, push a card into a PCI slot and turn the PC back on and follow the instructions.

Really is that simple. Well provided you are using Windows 98 or above, which seeing as you already have broadband (BT Voyager USB modem isn't it?) makes me think that you do indeed have 98 or above.

I haven't personally used the wireless on the router yet, it will be a few weeks before I do. But I have used it with my PC and Xbox at the same time and there were no problems at all.

Look at the link and decide if an extra £15 now and a bit of hassle is worth lots of extra funtionality and less hassle in the future.

Ah I see, so if I cancel BT Voyager 200 (which thankfully is still an option for me) could I get this one instead and it would suit all my needs? Would I need anything else. I guess I dont need a BT modem if I have BT as an ISP. let me know ASAP biggles ^_^ wow it looks like this delay with the modem wasnt a bad thing afterall.

The ports don't have to be used for that, I was just giving suggestions! 4 PCs would work just as well.

The reason ICS didn't work was that you don't have an ethernet card in your PC. Not a big deal as ICS is really poor. At least in my experience.

If you are going to want to link a PC, a laptop, an Xbox, a PS2 and possibly a GC you really have ordered the wrong thing. It'll work, but you will need to swap wires a lot.

This is the router I have:

There's quite a few spaces in there mind. It was under £65 inc VAT last week. That would have been perfect for you as it has the modem built into the router, has 4 ports (1 PC, 1 Xbox, 1 PS2 and 1 GC) and wireless so you could pick up a PCMCIA card that would slip into your dads laptop and would enable him to use the broadband from anywhere in the house.

If you can cancel your amazon order, I would and I would then get that. If you can't, you could always buy an ethernet switch. Think of it as bar plug.

Not expensive.

well I dont have a router as the modem is suppose to have one built in. From what it says I can only link up 2 things using the USB and Ethernet. I'm not sure whether I would have to buy yet another modem or just get a seperate router that I can link my comptuer, dad's laptop, older brother's playstation2, younger brother's xbox and my gamecube (when I get it) up to.

I don't have this new modem yet (I've been complaing to amazon because it says 24 hours and they still havent dispatched it since I ordered it on Tuesday) I was hoping using the standard BT voyager modem I have I could use Microsofts Internet Connection Sharing. But it wouldn't let me install it on add/remove something about "configurations not complete - install your network hardware first" so that put a stop to that.

If in the end I can only use 1 Ethernet connection then it'll suck but I guess I don't have any choice, just have to hope no one wants to play on all three consoles online at the same time while my dad is doing his work on his laptop >_<

No worries, I did a lot of research before buying a router last week. Who did you buy your router off of? I paid less than £65 for an ADSL 4 port router with wireless. Yeah, SR do a 15m cable that should work. However, if you look around you could get it a bit cheaper.

wow thank you very much biggles ^_^ sorry for making you check it out for me. I think I'll just get a new cable then, 15metres probably (i think the one SR sell will be okay unless anyone knows somewhere else I could try), I'll just have to share it with the xbox, ps2 and laptop. thanks again

You won't need a network card, you would only need that if the Voyager 200 didn't have USB connection. The page below has the specs for it.

http://www.voyager.bt.com/200/prodinfo.htm

It says it has a 3m cable with it.

802.11 is wireless networking. For that you would have needed a wireless router and wireless adaptor (either a card for fitting in the PC, or a USB connected box) that would allow the PC or Xbox to communicate with the router without a wire. It's more expensive. I have it, but I need it. If you don't, you'll be fine with what you've ordered.

i just ordered the BT Voyager 200, which is modem and router, I think it comes with 2 microfilters. BT sell it for 99 pounds but you can get it from amazon at 77 pounds. (lowest I found was 64 pounds).

It's a little confusing especially with Mav going on about a network card so I'm not sure if i need one of those too I think the modem/router is usb with a ethernet socket so whether i still need a network card if i use a cable from that instead of the pc - or if i not bother with the cables and get a linksys gaming wireless adapter (802.11b what the hell is that?). Then I need to find where to get some long cables (and if the PS2 needs a cable as well - I bought xboxlive and ps2 adapter at the same time[comes tomorrow]) to start with or a wireless thingie.
