Info from Rare employee

Perfect Dark 2 has been canned from XBOX 1 and is going over to XBOX 2.

Sabre Man Stamped has been canned from XBOX 1 and may not even be made for XBOX 2.

Kameo looks like its not going to be finished and may be canned.

Ghoulies has just been launched, sales are not to good and it should have been canned.

That's because all they've shown is the Live multiplayer shots.

And I can't let go... why do they haunt me so.

Alright, 3rd person, but from what I've seen of Live & Uncut it's all bang-bang shooter.

It was rushed near the end of development.

Starfox actually wasn't as bad as it was made out to be. Sure, it wasn't up to Rare's usual standards, and all the hype was wasted on a game that just manages to surpass the rating of 'average', but it certainly wasn't a bad game, as many suggested.

And, rushed out? It was in development for 5 years...

That says it all really. Whilst I miss Rare and the sort of games they made on the N64, I do have an Xbox as well so I will at least still be able to get them.

If Rare could put that magic X factor into all their games then they WOULD be the best developers in the world. Sadly though they haven't. That thread shows lots of disillusionment within Rare. Which really is a shame.

Whilst things appear rather dire for them I think that if there is any company that could straighten things up it would be Microsoft. You don't get to be the worlds biggest company without decent management. With time I think they'll sort out Rare. And if they can manage it properly, then it will be good for gaming as a whole.

I don't think Pokemon has lost any of its charm over time... although perhaps some larger additions rather than 2 PKMN per battle maybe needed.

Rare have never been the worlds greatest developer. They do, from time to time, develop a game so beautiful that we praise them... but the very next game is dogged with controversy.

Goldeneye was hailed as a king of shooters, Perfect Dark SHOULD have taken that crown. But still today when discussing the future of shooters we always compare to Goldeneye instead of Perfect Dark. Was the game not better? Well in my eyes it was but pockets of resistance that claimed the games latter levels were dull, it really tries to do too much and there are major slow down issues. Problems that I easily ignored but where there is criticism then we see the game as not meeting its full potential.

Banjo Kazooie another sublime piece of platforming, nearly rivalling Mario 64. But Rare's sequels Donkey kong and Banjo Tooie were so big on collecting, added so many moves per level, tried to make you do so little with each move the game became over complex, frustating and by the third level many a gamer gave up.

Blast Corps, KI gold and Diddy Kong Racing, all decent enough games that could easily be mistaken as well developed 3rd party titles. Nothing special, nothing awful a bit like Grabbed By The Gholies.

Then we got Conker, a game that was based around Banjo Kazooie's engine. BUT Rare had done away with the 2 tonnes of moves and put them in specialised B button pads... this meant we did not need to learn a new move for a certain level... it was given to us. And thanks to some fantastic parody Rare had rescued their falling platform ability.

But does that mean Rare have lost it? No not at all... just Rare are a VERY VERY sloppy developer they take so long to make a game. Those who back up Starfox Adventures for its potential are sorely missing the fact that the game took 3 and a half years to make... longer than the world reknown Ocarina of time... 2 years longer than Majora's Mask. And the game was released with many glarring errors, glitches and gameplay problems. I say 3 and a half years but that is how long after it was unveiled how long it was in development before that God only knows.

A change of a few characters and platform in no way gives Rare an excuse for making a pile of crud. Silicon Knights showed us how a good game can be made in that time with change of platforms. It is slightly worrying how Rare have evolved over the past 4 years. 2000 - Perfect Dark 2001- Conker's Bad Fur Day 2002 - Starfox Adventures 2003 - Grabbed by the Gholies.

Rare were developing more technically sublime titles as the years progressed and then they just sank. Starfox was so lacking the Rare humour as well that looked as if was in full force in Grabbed by The Gholies.

Nintendo need Rare as much as they need a slap in the face with a wet fish. The developer is sloppy, churns out dissapointing games from time to time and takes a bloody long time to do it. Especially as Rare themselves have over 4 development teams!!!!!

Nintendo were right to sell and put their money into the likes of Silicon Knights and Retro Studios. 2 companies that do not make errors, try something new with a certain level of determination and passion... a crew of designers and programmers that have yet to dissapoint and meet the deadlines they set out to meet. A bit of money into Capcom's fourth development studio insures some fantastic orginal ideas that Rare used to try with varying effects... Viewtiful Joe reached potential, Product Number :03 was enjoyable...

These are far better games, this is money far better spent and they all do what Rare did... appeal to the more adult gamer. Plus they are all far more efficient.

But where's the humour? Where's the endless delays? Where are the no comments...

These new efficient, fantastically experience developement crews are all well and good...

But i still miss Rare.

GBTG wasn't crap. Just mediocre.
A quick warm up, brushed up within a year, and not bad considering.

Starfox?
Well, the awful fighting system wears it down by the end, but most aspects of the game were fantastic, which shows that they haven't lost any of their potential.
It was just rushed out so the could buggger off to MS.

Besides, you were whole-heartedly defending it this time last year! ;-)

Yeah. Kameo's a turn based RPG... NOT! :-P

Capturing and training monsters is where the similarity ends.
This is what Nintendo SHOULD have done with their franchise instead of leaving it at it's "great for it's time but worn and out-dated now" state.
From the video I saw of Kameo (when Rare first moved) it looked fantastic.

So long as they don't screw up the Gameplay Starfox style, then it might just be a classic... maybe...

No i miss it all... their humour... their delays... the no comment... the scribes letter page... the constant discussions with N64 magazine...

I don't care if Retro are a more efficient, less delay friendly and more confident developer... They are not quite the same.
