Sorry sorry sorry for that horrible title... but I had to think of something.

All I can say is wow, this seems an amazing Idea... Before Rickoss harps on about the Virtual Boy and 64DD may I point out that the VB enduced headaches which was why it failed and the 64DD was released too late.

This new DS probably means Nintendo are to abandon their GBA connectivity feature as this essentially does the same thing!!!!! For those who haven't read the press release I will put it down below, but this is a really fantastic original and pure fun idea.

In a shocking announcement which is set to rock the gaming world, Nintendo have released details of their forthcoming DS Portable gaming system. Rumours began flying a few weeks ago after mysterious words were uttered from Nintendo spokes people regarding a new machine. Some thought the machine would be the fabled “Game Boy Enhanced” with the mighty power to play Game Boy Advance AND Gamecube games, however this is not the case.

This surprising move from Nintendo sees them releasing a third stand-alone portable system to take games playing and interactivity to a completely different plane of existence! This new machine will feature not one but two 3” TFT LCD screens to allow for greater scope and perspective on the games. The two screens will be backlit to allow for poor-light play. The main processor is pparently an "ARM 9" with the Sub-processor an "ARM 7".

Here’s the official word from Nintendo:

”Players can look forward to being able to manage their game progress from two different perspectives, enhancing both the speed and strategy of the challenge. For example in a football game, you can view the whole game on one screen, while simultaneously focusing on an individual footballer's tackle or goal on the other screen. Players will no longer be forced to interrupt game play to shift perspective, such as moving from a wide shot to a close up, or alternating between a character's ongoing battle and a map of their environment. Nintendo DS makes it possible to perform the tasks in real time by simply glancing from one screen to the other.”

Self-styled “Funny Man of Gaming” and Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had this to say on the new product:

"We have developed Nintendo DS based upon a completely different concept from existing game devices in order to provide players with a unique entertainment experience for the 21st century"

The Nintendo DS will feature two separate screens, separate processors and a semiconductor memory of up to 1 gigabit. It will be marketed and sold as a separate entity to Game Boy Advance and the Gamecube systems. More information will be available at E3 when the system will be fully unveiled for the first time. Nintendo says we can expect a world-wide launch before the end of the year!

Cube-Europe.

So if you have to look from one screen to another the whole point of two screens is irrelevant. Most games get round this by having a 'menu screen'. And using one screen.

This is a crap idea.

The VB was not a virtual reality headset because it never attempted that kind of thing, you were basically strapping two screens in front of your eyes and playing GB games, in red...

Uh huh, except there is a fine line between innovative and crap, and most recently companies have found their ideas falling into the crap. Nintendo have a big list, Atari, 3DO, Sega, Nokia, but not Sony. I know whose handheld I'll be waiting for...

Hmm, im inclined to agree with the majority here and say that at the moment it looks fairly pointless.

It had better have some form of wireless too, in which case the extra screen could be VERY handy with it's own processor.

It could handle all the connecting so you don't have to break up your main playing time on the main screen while you wait.

Imagine playing it on a train, and unknown to you, someone else is playing.
The extra screen could hint at another player and give you the option of challenging them.
This would be a pain the arsse if it interupted your game on the main screen...

It's got a lot of possibilities but it depends on what devellopers make of them. Also, it had better not be the hardware's only feature.
Without the other things like some sort of analogue stick and wireless connectivity then the double screen won't hold it on it's own.

Hmm. Another thought:

The PSP has a fairly big screen and isn't too compact around the rest of the unit.
The DS has 2 3" screens and controls. Even if it uses a flip-screen it'll be getting quite big.

Maybe I just have high standards after the SP, but the size of these things seems to be getting a little.. um.. less portable than they should be.

I think it meant one screen for the regular action and one radar-style overhead view, showing the positions of all the players on the pitch.

Although 3d wouldn't surprise me either.

At first I thought this sounded a bit lame, but the possibilities do sound quite good, given some thought.

Then again, it has similar possibilities to the cube-gba connectivity, there would be fewer barriers to people using it, but it still has the same potential for exercises in lameness.

Also, you can't really focus on 2 screens at once, not beyond a limited degree of peripheral vision. And if you only use one screen at a time then it's not all that much better than pushing a couple of buttons to change the display on one screen.
Which makes this look like a gimmick or poor idea. Perhaps.

I'll be waiting for more concrete details before a final opinion. In particular whether it turns out as a GBA replacement or side-runner.

It is a good idea
But I am missing the thing that everyone wants.
Something like the PSP.
Sure, it will sell some units over the world, but the world has become more focused on design than innovative ideas.

One thing I would like to see in a fps on the DS is a weapon equal to the laptop gun in perfekt dark.
Then you could watch the main game on on screen and from the laptop gun's view on the other one.
Role-playing games would also be nice with the main game the left screen and your stats and items on the other.
If the system has a hardisk and was capable of storing, maybe you could choose songs from the right screen while you were playing a game.

I think it's quite a cool idea.

Hell, if I rule Nintendo, I wouldn't have done it. But that Iwata-san is mental so why not :D?

Though they did state that the GBA2 will be the PSP rival, not the DS. It sounds intriguing, and I look forward to seeing what they do with it and how games use the double screens.

One thing that i dont understand is how big the ds will be.
With two screens and possibly 4 AAA batteries it will probably be huge.
And how will the design be.
The DS is a good concept, but I am not sure how they can implement the feature in enough games to make it last.

The one flaw I can take from this is the fact that Nintendo are now developing three different consoles now. Which there isn't much point in.

However, this looks fun.

But as far as I am aware, the DS is not a virtual reality headset, and does NOT force you to focus on two screens.

What it does is give you a second screen to look at for alternate views - no one is expecting both screens to be looked at at the same time.

And I'm sure Nintendo are aware of the PSP - that's why they have come up with this fresh innovative idea.
