All I can say is wow, this seems an amazing Idea... Before Rickoss harps on about the Virtual Boy and 64DD may I point out that the VB enduced headaches which was why it failed and the 64DD was released too late.
This new DS probably means Nintendo are to abandon their GBA connectivity feature as this essentially does the same thing!!!!! For those who haven't read the press release I will put it down below, but this is a really fantastic original and pure fun idea.
In a shocking announcement which is set to rock the gaming world, Nintendo have released details of their forthcoming DS Portable gaming system. Rumours began flying a few weeks ago after mysterious words were uttered from Nintendo spokes people regarding a new machine. Some thought the machine would be the fabled “Game Boy Enhanced” with the mighty power to play Game Boy Advance AND Gamecube games, however this is not the case.
This surprising move from Nintendo sees them releasing a third stand-alone portable system to take games playing and interactivity to a completely different plane of existence! This new machine will feature not one but two 3” TFT LCD screens to allow for greater scope and perspective on the games. The two screens will be backlit to allow for poor-light play. The main processor is pparently an "ARM 9" with the Sub-processor an "ARM 7".
Here’s the official word from Nintendo:
”Players can look forward to being able to manage their game progress from two different perspectives, enhancing both the speed and strategy of the challenge. For example in a football game, you can view the whole game on one screen, while simultaneously focusing on an individual footballer's tackle or goal on the other screen. Players will no longer be forced to interrupt game play to shift perspective, such as moving from a wide shot to a close up, or alternating between a character's ongoing battle and a map of their environment. Nintendo DS makes it possible to perform the tasks in real time by simply glancing from one screen to the other.”
Self-styled “Funny Man of Gaming” and Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had this to say on the new product:
"We have developed Nintendo DS based upon a completely different concept from existing game devices in order to provide players with a unique entertainment experience for the 21st century"
The Nintendo DS will feature two separate screens, separate processors and a semiconductor memory of up to 1 gigabit. It will be marketed and sold as a separate entity to Game Boy Advance and the Gamecube systems. More information will be available at E3 when the system will be fully unveiled for the first time. Nintendo says we can expect a world-wide launch before the end of the year!
Cube-Europe.
DUDE!
Not a load of past franchises rehashed to get quick sales.
After all they will be the only company that will have titles ready for the end of 2004... bar maybe EA.

No doubt, it is certainly an interesting project. But as you say yourself - It *could* have so many fantastic ideas; the *possibilities* are endless. It's a matter of wether the development companies will want to commit time to making dual-screen games when they could be making fantastic single screen games on the PSP and GBE.
I do hope it gets picked up and used well, it would be a refreshing change that *could* shake the handheld (maybe even the whole) gaming industry - in what ways I'm not sure right now (if I did, I *could* be a rich man).
By the way, you know it's going to get support from EA and Ubi - they won't want to miss out on the extra cash. So FIFA is a certainty...
Just wait, the possibilties are endless... see what they announce at E3... see what it looks like.... and I think you'll agree Nintendo aren't just releasing this system to deflect interest from the PSP (which they are) but also because it will have some really class ideas locked away in it.
Designers minds the world over will be challenged by the idea... Kojima must be very excited.
With Nintendo making it though, it could well be great; if the likes of Shigsy manages create games on par, or at least almost as good as, games like Ocarina of Time, Mario 64 and Metroid Prime, they could have a winner. Perhaps not in terms of sales, but we all know Nintendo make the best games around, and they'll most likely use the dual screens to their advantage.
At first I thought this was a crap idea, but I suppose it's better than nothing at all (maybe).
Like the Pokemon mini, Virtual Boy and 64DD... all mini systems in their own right... in fact even the Gameboy originally had a very low ammount of software line up... the idea is to create a new gaming experience... release a few games to start with.... not some thirty game launch mostly third party... but maybe 3 games from Nintendo...
These games offer you the oppertunity to play a very different type a game, a game Nintendo were thinking of before they designed the system, a highly enjoyable... more complex game that changes the way you play games.
With 2 screens this console has the possibility to look damn sexy and intrigue gamers worldwide. If it turns out to be a fantastic gameplay addition and not a gimick, because this is possible with a GBA-GC connection (using 2 screens) then Nintendo may have hit a winning little niche idea.
Out comes the GBA 2 and N5... Nintendo battle on as she does every year... ups and downs and ultimatly fine...
But what of the DS? Well it will either be a nice idea nobody is interested in or it's a nice idea that attracts a wide range of gamers... in which case 3rd parties will want to make games for it... particulary the western gamers... and with the mention of footy games I wouldn't be surprised if ISS, pro evo or even FIFA is in mind for a launch... and that's a pull factor.
Well done Nintendo, from a gamers point of view it seems like a really good idea... just when the industry pattern was getting ever so slightly dull you've come up with a system that doesn't induce headaches, isn't released too late in Japan only and isn't a Pokemon cash in. I am really looking forward to playing these new forms of games and I am dissapointed in the lot of you for not thinking "these games will be fun". Stop worrying about the bussiness side of things for a change... thats Nintendo's job and they seem to be doing fine.
Dringo.
I liked your idea about the Laptop gun though...

Sony did produce a flop - or at least endorsed it - The Glove. I still wanted one though.
