All I can say is wow, this seems an amazing Idea... Before Rickoss harps on about the Virtual Boy and 64DD may I point out that the VB enduced headaches which was why it failed and the 64DD was released too late.
This new DS probably means Nintendo are to abandon their GBA connectivity feature as this essentially does the same thing!!!!! For those who haven't read the press release I will put it down below, but this is a really fantastic original and pure fun idea.
In a shocking announcement which is set to rock the gaming world, Nintendo have released details of their forthcoming DS Portable gaming system. Rumours began flying a few weeks ago after mysterious words were uttered from Nintendo spokes people regarding a new machine. Some thought the machine would be the fabled “Game Boy Enhanced” with the mighty power to play Game Boy Advance AND Gamecube games, however this is not the case.
This surprising move from Nintendo sees them releasing a third stand-alone portable system to take games playing and interactivity to a completely different plane of existence! This new machine will feature not one but two 3” TFT LCD screens to allow for greater scope and perspective on the games. The two screens will be backlit to allow for poor-light play. The main processor is pparently an "ARM 9" with the Sub-processor an "ARM 7".
Here’s the official word from Nintendo:
”Players can look forward to being able to manage their game progress from two different perspectives, enhancing both the speed and strategy of the challenge. For example in a football game, you can view the whole game on one screen, while simultaneously focusing on an individual footballer's tackle or goal on the other screen. Players will no longer be forced to interrupt game play to shift perspective, such as moving from a wide shot to a close up, or alternating between a character's ongoing battle and a map of their environment. Nintendo DS makes it possible to perform the tasks in real time by simply glancing from one screen to the other.”
Self-styled “Funny Man of Gaming” and Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had this to say on the new product:
"We have developed Nintendo DS based upon a completely different concept from existing game devices in order to provide players with a unique entertainment experience for the 21st century"
The Nintendo DS will feature two separate screens, separate processors and a semiconductor memory of up to 1 gigabit. It will be marketed and sold as a separate entity to Game Boy Advance and the Gamecube systems. More information will be available at E3 when the system will be fully unveiled for the first time. Nintendo says we can expect a world-wide launch before the end of the year!
Cube-Europe.
DUDE!
I agree with the guy on one point though.
I just don't get excited by press releases like I used to and I haven't enjoyed the Gamecube a fraction to what I thought I would (partly because I'm a more experienced gamer since my N64 days and seen it all before and partly because Nintendo haven't QUITE taken their games as far as I thought they would).
Although the new generation of consoles sound interesting, I'm not even going to consider buying one until they are going for £100 with a decent game - I.E. anything up to 2-3 years after their release.
And even then, I think the biggest advance will be online based.
Xbox live only with all the teething problems ironed out for good, and the good idea's and innovations taken even further.
It needs a controller, and the Dual Shock 2 is perfect for it.
Fact is, while Sony have lost many of their exclusives, Playstation owners still have a lot going for them. They'll all be starting new games on Metal Gear Solid 3, while Xbox owners just have Substance and GameCube owners are completing The Twin Snakes (the latter being over, what, five years old?). There'll also be the new Grand Theft Auto, with PC/Xbox players having to make do with the dated predecessors.
There's also a lot of gems people overlook (such as Ico), as they see the console as just a big franchise casual thing. I have a PS2 and I like it's game collection. And hey, you just can't beat Pro Evolution Soccer 3.
I know that it is a third pillar and that that feature would destroy the gba market and stuff, but it would make the sales incredible if you could play all your Game Boy games on it.
Mybe Nintendo will come up with a game boy advance player?
If Nintendo wants success they will have to make a NEW Mario game, a NEW Zelda game and a new Pokemon game, as well as the support from third-party developers.
They will also have to come up with something entirely new, like a game who fully uses the hardware.
Since it will arrive at fall, maybe we will get Fifa and Tony Hawk?
We will just have to wait and see then.
This years E3 is going to one hell of a battle between Sony and Nintendo.
The same can be said for the Dreamcast, one of the greatest consoles to date yet highly over looked by people waiting for the supposedly "better" PS2, sadly it never arrived. The PS2 then ported 'cast offs' from the Dreamcast to the PS2 where incidently they sold on mass where as on the Dreamcast no one really knew what they were.
Sales are all well and good if the companies have the software quality to back it up, I look upon the PS2 as the worst place to play the best multi-format games, why play them there when 9 times out of 10 the Xbox, GameCube or PC has a much better version, not to mention exclusive titles to back them up.
Metal Gear: Twin Snakes is seriously looking like a possible Half Life 2 challenger yet on the Cube it won't sell half as many as it would if it was released on the PS2. Rap a piece of crap up with a pretty box and some swear words on the back and PS2 owners would flock to shops dying to get a piece of the so called 'popular action'.
Silent Hill series - now on Xbox and PC.
Tenchu series - now on Xbox.
Driver series - now on GameCube, Xbox and PC.
Metal Gear series - now on GameCube, Xbox and PC.
GTA series - now on Xbox and PC.
Pro Evolution Soccer series - now on PC.
Final Fantasy series - Possibly heading back to the Cube.
Since CORE have split up its unlikely we will be seeing a Tomb Raider game in the forseeable future so they can kiss good by to sales profits from that. Take all these away (including the shabby '6 month exclusivety deal') and whats left of the Playstation? A cheap knock off like the Eyetoy which is good fun for about 5 minutes and then quickly becomes another Sony item to collect dust?! A new Jak and Daxter game? Hardly ground breaking. I think the Eyetoy I sold on EBay went for £39.00 yet Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast was halted in production due to pi$$ poor sales.
When I got a PS2 back again in the Summer of last year I thought they would make a real bid to make the PS2 an item of quality, instead I was fobbed off with one multi-format game after another, even Manhunt (which was enjoyable) was reported to be heading to the PC and Xbox, they now have a solid release of August this year for the game.
> But that doesn't matter as long as NINTENDO make fantastic games for
> it...
Nintendo ended up being one of the few developers making games for the N64.. and that was a brilliant success against the Playstation, wasn't it?
