My beloved xbox passed away last night, well the cd-rom did any way.
Wont recgonize any games or films atall, just says no disk.

It's off to my mates tonight to try and be rapaired, but he said i was either looking at £70 for a new cd-rom, or i may have to buy a new one.

When i spent like £150 on the xbox i expected it to last alot longer then 14 months.

Any of you had any problems with the xbox?

(This is the first problem i have ever had with it)

Will it make you feel better when i take out the chip, take out the 80GB HDD then chuck it down the stairs and claim that i tripped when i was taking it down there?

Then i get a nice new one, put in my good ole' chip and 80GB HDD and continue business as usual.

Wrong. Chipping is illegal. Sony won a recent court battle to that effect against a website selling the chips and Microsoft is currently preparing its case against the alledged developers of a well known Xbox chip. Read the small print in the Xbox manual - unauthoried reverse engineering or circumvention of copy protection IS prohibited and IS illegal.

In fact it brings a little smile to my face to hear of your console dying on you, may it continue to happen to every console you chip.

If it's legal, why won't M$ fix it, or why can't you do it in shops?

Chipping them is 100% legal too, as long as you use it to watch region free films ect.
You just are not allowed to play coppied games.

Yes it saves you alot of money i guess, but you need to learn how to do it all.

Mine died about 3 months ago in the exact same way.

As my XBOX is 100% legal and was still under warranty, I got a replacement XBOX.

Chipping consoles saves you a lot of money doesn't it?

lots of cheap ones on ebay, where people have replaced original drives with Samsung ones etc.

Sure it's not the laser/lens ?
