The hype of the PS2 made it so popular that half the nation, along with me, all booked it in advance and then sat there patientally playing on our playstation's waiting for the release. Now to start with the machine is ulgy but that is no reason to hate it, right? Well I'll get back to you on that one but the main difference was the graphics. They took gaming to the enxt level. Ok Forget the Dreamcast what did they actually do? Well obviously not a lot as they had to reduce there console price by 200 pounds as no-one was buying it. The Playstation game designers had to show the power of it and that's exactly what they did. The ingame graphics are amazing on all the games, but are they playable? The answer to that is sadly no. With the release of the original playstation we where taken to the next beyond the next level. It made games realistic and playable and that is what everyone wanted. Still it shows its power by releasing game after game which are mainly playable. The graphics got better and better as we went along and certain games were released that changed gaming overall. Take ISS Pro Evolution and Metal Gear Solid for example both with great graphics and even better gameplay. That is the thing the game designers on the PS2 have missed? But now back to the original question. Ok we get a dvd player and a console that let's you play both playstation games and playstation2 games. What could be wrong with that? And the answer to that is really nothing. The only thing that makes me hate the PS2 is that you need a playstation memory card to save playstation games. That's it. If they could make a decent game then there sales would go up. Now let's see what you think about that and by the end of today I'll probally have over 100 hate mail and a letter bomb in my post.

You shouldn't. I'll post the official figures tonight, so watch this space.

Not a true comparison - handhelds always sell well, because they're so much cheaper than 'real' consoles.

If Sony were to start selling the PS2 at the GBA's price tomorrow, you can bet the sales figures would change quite dramatically.

Really? i find that hard to believe as the Game Boy advance is outselling the ps-one and ps2 put together! and once the gamecube comes out, Nintendo Will dominate the games console market.

well, all you sonyphiles who reckon the ps2 is actually worth £300 are MAD in my opinion, n e way enjoy playing with your overhyped dvd player that plays games as well because the gamecube is coming and it will kick the ps2 off the face of the earth! Gamecube rules!

cheers humpo, I thought I'd heard it somewhere. considering the slice of profit going to the console distributors, there's a fairly big pile of cash for sony to claw back via software sales.

Its definitely a cheap piece of kit for the things it can do (games, cds, dvds, digi optical ouptoput), and its potential ((usb ports for mouse a k/board, i-link, digital audio optical output, hard drive 'hole' etc. There's even a movement to get the link kit released in Japan to be released in the states and here.

definitely worth it

i think it depends on how serious you are for gaming. for little kids hell no but for people with spare doh who want the best of coarse its worth it. the more expensive something is the better it is fools. or if you like collexting consoles and getting them chipped like me its also worth it as your the only person in the year you know has one (although some brat says hes got1 but nobadys seen it)

let's not forget on the games front, the PS2 only came out recently, lets give the developers time to make some decent games before slagging them off!
