COMPETITION CLOSED

AND THE WINNER IS:

AliBoy for his BINGO suggestion. I am hoping to trial this for a few weeks as soon as we have had a chance to program it. Each user will get a Bingo card in their MyFreeola profiles page, and the random numbers will be displayed on the forums through the week. I like this because it provides us with something to promote in one of the e-mail bulletins, and it might encourage people to visit the forums more regularly.

Well done AliBoy. This win should be on the winners list within the next week.

There were some other excellent suggestions, and I particularly liked pb's Find Something Free suggestion, and AliBoy's slant on a Talent Competition, where each user has only one entry of any kind (though there are the obvious alter-identity issues with this).

One of our £30 Gameaday Prizes will go to the winner of this competition.

Your task is to suggest the best idea for a Gameaday Competition to be held on the chat forums at some time in the future. If the winning idea is worthy enough, then we will promote it in the next issue of our fabulous Freeola News Bulletin, to attract competitive types to the forums.

You have two weeks to come up with your idea. The closing date is Midnight on February 7th.

Your idea must work within the normal framework of the chat forums and you should explain it fully and in good English.

ABSOLUTELY NO edited posts will be considered and if the same idea is suggested several times it will be the first one which counts.

Enter this competition at any time between now and Feb 7th, simply by posting your idea on this thread, perhaps starting with the phrase "My incredible idea is..."

You can enter as many times as you want but we reserve the right to delete the entire works of competition spammers.

Extra brownies will go to anybody who's idea seems likely to produce something useful, or would encourage a high level of interest.

Nope - we will not run a Cutest Forum User's Baby Competition.

Wikify Freeola (& Special Reserve)

Currently, Wikipedia doesn’t contain an article for Freeola or Special Reserve. This GAD competition would involve users contributing to build an article for each, with as much detail about Freeola and SR as possible, (eg the special reserve shops, mail order divisions, membership program, etc), how and when both companies were founded, their purpose as a business, as well as the downfall of SR and how Freeola took over some aspects of the defunct company.

Freeola staff would need to verify the information submitted for accuracy, but either they, or a voted in ‘project manager’ for the Wikify GAD competition could compile the contributions together, before the finished articles are officially submitted.

The articles would need to follow Wikipedia guidelines, and be proper articles.

Winners would be decided on the quantity and quality (detail and accuracy) of contributions to the articles. If a ‘project manager’ were to be assigned, they would not be entitled to an automatic GAD, as their work would also be judged accordingly, but they wouldn’t necessarily have to contribute in the same way as others to win, as their main role would be to compile the articles (my nomination would be Machie for this job).

For this particular competition, GAD values would not have to be the standard £30; with £5, £10, £15 etc vouchers being available to allow more prizes to be awarded, without Freeola having to dip in to their pockets too much, or limit the prizes to only two or three winners.

This competition may encourage old members to return, and new members to learn a little more about Freeola.

Design a Freeola / Gameaday advert destined for print

Those of you who remember the days of Special Reserve may remember that they used to advertise in gaming related magazines (GamesMaster, Sega Power I think, etc). This GAD would be to create an advert, ready to appear in today’s popular magazines or newspapers.

This competition would actually involve producing the advert, rather than simply describing what you’d put together. Submissions should be made as a static image (no animation, as that can’t be printed) as a PNG, JPG, BMP, PDF, etc.

The specs of the advert will be set by Freeola - such as width and height the advert would take up (either as pixels or a percentage of a page) and what specifics about Freeola they’d like to advertise (Broadband only, Broadband and dial-up, free web space, etc) - and the winner would be the advert that Freeola would consider using in paid for ad space in a magazine / newspaper.

Contributors would need to include details of their advert, such as the name of the font used, origin of any images used, etc, as to allow Freeola the chance to gain permission to use them in official print if need be. Entering this GAD would automatically grant Freeola permission to use any custom created imagery in print, but would not hand over the imagery to Freeola directly (similar to how the BBC accept imagery).

Re-brand GAD

While the GAD brand worked well under Special Reserve, because the games were picked from actual SR stock, it isn’t really accurate to the current competition under Freeola, mainly because you don’t actually win a game anymore, nor does the value of the voucher cover the cost of an XBOX 360, Wii or PS3 game (bar some exceptions) from Amazon or Argos.

Because of this, I think the GAD brand currently undersells itself. The prize is £30 of vouchers, which may appeal to more people if they knew this from the off, rather than thinking a free game is on offer. While people searching for game cheats and walkthroughs would naturally like the offer, others who come across the forums may not see the appeal, and rather than stay and become an active member, may just Google to the next forum.

This GAD competition would require users to create a new brand for Freeola, such as a new name, new logo and other related graphics.

Sorry for any spelling mistakes or bits that don’t make sense, but the rules state, no edits :)
