Whilst rumours fly around that these are fake pictures, I think there is a good chance that they could be real. And if they are real...is it just me or does it look a tad on the ugly side?
I'll reserve judgement until an official press release...
Maybe I'm wrong, and I might very well be, but that is my experience with portable gaming.
I see people play GBA SPs on the bus and underground fairly often, even more so on flights.
Not to mention kids playing them everywhere all the time.
Obviously I'm judging by my own experiences here, but I know plenty of people who would feel the exact same way as me. Like I said, it depends on where you live, but I live in the most densely populated part of the country.

I did a few years back, more so with GBA nowadays, with the exception that the audience I have noticed is older.

Not on buses because of the potential crime (though I've seen one person play on his GBA on the bus before), but on trains and aircraft, yes. I've also seen people play on their handheld consoles in lecture theatres, restaurants and cafes.

You misunderstand the entire concept here. People don't play games in public. When do you ever see people playing Gameboys? It's the most popular and abundant console in the world, and it's portable, but you never see people playing them. Why? Why is that? What makes you think that the PSP will change this?
You will not suddenly start getting on buses and trains and see people playing GT4 or Metroid on their new handheld. I'm sorry if you think this, but it's just not going to happen. By all means, you can say that you will play your PSP on the way to work, but I doubt that you will. You'll most likely end up playing it at home, even though you've got a 28" widescreen in the corner.
This is just how the handheld market works in this country. If we lived in Japan, it would be different, but we don't. There is a stigma attached to public gaming, and not even the word Playstation will change that.
The thing is, most people would be too worried about looking stupid, or more likely, worried about getting their 100+ hardware stolen by some thug with a knife who follows you off the bus. Obviously it depends on where you live, but it is certainly the case in most cities that sensible people don't show off expensive things to potential thieves.

I am not proclaiming any system - I'm just showing you that you shouldn't write off a system (which is what you were doing, even if you've changed your stance now). To me, a PSP doesn't sound interesting. A Playstation Portable. The Playstation didn't interest me. Why would a portable one be any different?
To you the DS doesn't sound interesting. That's fine, I'm just being optimistic. Why focus on the things that you think the system CAN'T do, rather than focusing on what it MIGHT do. Obviously thinking of what it 'might' do requires a little imagination, and a little faith. But I have faith, and if you don't then that's up to you, but I think you'll find that most people do have some.
You may think that it seems a little contradictory to write off the portability of handhelds before telling you not to write them off, but I have more faith in developers than in consumers. It's a given that public use of new gaming systems is not actually a realistic feature, no matter how good the console, and it's nothing to do with DS vs PSP, or anything like that.

Very few people in my Sixth Form, own a Nintendo Console, (Cube or GBA) but when they (the males) saw the Nintendo DS, they were amazed! They loved it! All the features etc. Even my PS2 owning fanboy mates loved it! I was really quite surprised, and i get the idea that they will be turned on their negative stances towards the Gamecube, what with the upcoming line up of games.
As for the DS. Well, it may not have the umph of the PSP, but look at what the N64 could do, and who could tell on a screen as small as that? Most 3D games would be completely possible, including something similar to GTA3.
With the backward compatibility and Nintendo's games, it's pretty much assured me that one will be in my pocket soon.
But the big question is....will it be the first Ninty handheld to be region coded? Hopefully not.
