Post any films you have seen recently (cinema, DVD or TV) along with a short review.

Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift

7/10

Its rubbish really. The story is pathetic and the set pieces are unbelievable (the Japanese Yakuza settling a problem with some punk kid by having a car race? I dont think so), but the only reason you would go to see this film is for the cars anyway and the races all look great. It was as fun to watch as the other two, possibly even better than #2 and there is a nice surprise at the end for fans of the series.

If you are wanting some great acting, a heart wrentching story and some brilliantly detailed drama, then this isnt for you. If you want Japanese girls in short skirts driving customised sports cars then I think you'll love it.

The Good Girl 6/10

It cant seem to make up it's mind whether it's a comedy or a drama and the two dont sit easily together.
The relationship between Aniston and Gyllenhall doesn't work, it's suddenly just there for little reason as if they director didnt have time to fit it in. It makes no sense that a woman as smart as Anistons character, would fall for someone as intensely irritating and childish either and it stops any empathy with either main protagonist. In fact the only character you come away liking is Anistons husband, which is certainly not the aim judging by the closing monologue which is entirely biased and self-pitying.
Having said that the comedy moments in this film are subtly and not -so-subtly brilliant. The eulogy for a suicidal worker which includes the advice "Perhaps the lesson to be learnt here is to not be disturbed" followed by a very apt song was outstanding and that sort of black humour runs throughout the entire film. It's just a real shame it jars so badly with the more serious moments because this could have been a really great film, without the identity crisis.

Marie Antoinette - 5/10

I saw this not so long ago on a flight. The flight was 9 hours, I'd swear this movie was on for 6 of those, it just seemed to drag on for so long. Definitely a case of style over substance.
Great sets and costumes but the story always felt a bit flat.

Mr Bean's Holiday - 6/10

I suppose you either love or hate Mr Bean. My one complaint though is this wasnt really classic Mr Bean at all. A hallmark of the series was always his bizarre solutions to problems and selfish behaviour. Apart from one scene at the beginning, he was just an affable bungling fool generally.

Marie Antoinette - 9/10

"Let them eat cake!" I think she was a victim of the paparazzi of her time. Never the less, 'tis was a very beautiful set. The director, Sofia Coppola, brought a humanistic aire to the throne following along the 'a day in the life' theme. She comically casted the monarchy as having some pretty hilarious protocol, which I found to be entirely entertaining. There was some scandal there eh? Mmmmm..scandal. It wasn't blatent, just insinuated. Gotta love it. I'm not particularly into Kirsten Dunst, but something about her role as the queen was quite intriguing. She pulled it off with much grace and composure that this movie boosted her out of her Virgin Suicides and Spidy roles, expanding her into the more seriously diverse arena of acting. Kind of like what Shakespeare In Love did for Gwyneth Paltrow.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3.....6/10

I am a huge POTC fan, loved number 1 and 2 but number 3 didnt quite live up to it for me...think there was a lack of sword fights and too much confusion when they were all trying to bargain with each other! Maybe if i watch it again ill understand more!

Ghost Rider - 1/10

Woeful, doesnt even stand up as a mindless action movie you can watch without engaging your brain. And I dont know why they bothered having Nicholas Cage in it. A cardboard cutout would have sufficed.

Next - 3/10

Entirely predictable movie with some more of Nicholas Cage's "wonderful" acting. Not a particularly well balanced movie, it spends entirely too long getting to the point.

Garden State 8/10

I always start out hating it but it improves from the moment Ms Portman appears. I think it's probably a deliberate effect to mirror the film. I dock it a point for the slightly clumsy ending.
