Surely the chicken must have come first. I feel that a creature before the chicken must have evolved slightly, creating a egg laying animal. This is because when I turn the question around I see that the egg must have come from somewhere - right?!

Maybe God put it in a incubator like hole...
Or something like Bart Simpson done (bulbs in a box in a treehouse)

How would the egg hatch? You would need a chicken to sit on it. Also if you are going the God route, The Bible says that God created the animals, i.e. the chicken came first.

Or, God just created eggs with the potential for them to hatch into chickens therefore eggs came first.

In which case the concepts of both were created at the same time by an all-powerful being.

Therefore: neither came first.

Yeah, the chicken came first when God created it. It was created with the ability to lay eggs.

If you want to use evolution as a basis for your answer you've little choice but to accept that the egg came first. Part of being a chicken is that it hatched from an egg and that it lays eggs for pro-creation. Anything else, no matter how close isnt a chicken. :)
