At first, when rumors started to fly about Xbox buying Nintendo I wasn’t very keen - because after all, it wouldn’t have been the same, would it?
But now, if either Microsoft or Sony bought Nintendo out, and had Nintendo making quality games without having to worry about console sales then everybody would be a winner.
Obviously this won’t happen in the current consoles, and I don't think it will happen in the next wave either, although I would like it to. But it’s bound to happen one day.
Just imagine; a Playstation with Zelda, Jak, Mario, Final Fantasy’s and GTA all on one console.
Or an Xbox with Halo, Ninja Gaiden mixed with some of Nintendo’s laid back classics. In fact - if Microsoft bought Nintendo maybe we could see some Nintendo & Rare calibrations. Donkey Kong Country 2 perhaps?
This is the way forward, I’m inclined to admit. Been stubborn never got anybody anywhere.

Well I want a bigger pad that's more suited to FPS games, a serious heavyweight commitment to online gaming and official multiplayer games that aren't copied and pasted direct from the '64.
Basically I want an Xbox... and I have 2.
Quit the console market? Are you joking? Nintendo innovate in hardware as much as they do in software, and it will truly be a sad day when it's left to power-hungry giants Sony and Microsoft to push gaming forward. Granted, with the Eye Toy and Xbox Live, they're certainly not completely dull - but the focus is certainly on high specifications.
Nintendo will give us what we really want in consoles - even though many people don't realise they want it. They've given us the rumble pak, the analogue stick, the touch screen and a whole lot more - and if the promises about the GBA 2 and Revolution are even half fulfilled, they look set to keep it coming.
Not only do Nintendo not need to quit the console market (the GameCube creating a tidy profit at second place, with the GBA dominating the handheld market and not budging), it would be hugely disappointing if they do. They say the day they quit hardware is the day they quit software, and I can see where they're coming from.
> They're attempting to appeal to the western market
The N64 did it far better though.
They're attempting to appeal to the western market as well as keep their Japanese customers happy.
I remember reading something a while back where a representative of Nintendo was commenting on them focusing on getting back their home territory after the N64.
And as for the link ups? I can't afford that; along with many other people.
After all that is both regions covered, Nintendo do badly in the west and Microsoft do badly in the east.
It wouldn't be good for the Nintendo to go multi-format. You say that Nintendo won't need to "worry about" console sales etc... the thing is this pressure of losing third party support and a falling fan base has made Nintendo make better and more original games. Look at next years titles, Resident Evil 4 and Zelda will destroy the competiton in terms of how fun they appear.
Pressure is due to competition which increases quality. Also Nintendo make games for themselves because they have free reign. Can you see Sony or Microsoft allowing Nintendo, a 2nd party, to create GBA link up games and bongo controllers. If Nintendo were under Microsoft's wing or Sony's then games like Four Swords, Pacman Vs. and Four Swords would never see the light of day. Nintendo would find it much harder to hand out franchises to other developers than they do currently (because they don't get the full profit for it... at least if it was made on their console there maybe an increase in console sales) and therefore less original titles as Nintendo are spending too much time on the sequels.
Think about what Nintendo can't do. It isn't just Mario, Zelda and Pikmin along side Halo, Doom 3 and Knights of the Old Republic.... it's goodbye Crystal Chronicles, experimental gameplay and hardware.
Lets not be hasty. It's not over yet.
Sony will fall one day, it's how things work.
The DS next year may arrest a dying fan base.
Nintendo having the dominance: This would be the most beneficial for Nintendo. They would be able to design the console to their needs (much like Shigeru Miyamoto did for the GameCube and the controller), have the final say on how things are marketed and wouldn't have to mess around with going to the head company in order to decide on future moves with Nintendo hardware and software.
Nintendo being dominated: This would be suicide for Nintendo. If I agreed with your points, I would have to say that this arrangement would be even worse for Nintendo. They would not be able to have the freedom that allows Nintendo to be Nintendo. They wouldn't be able to release all their special edition units which people do collect (especially in Japan) and they wouldn't necessarily have all the backing they'd need from the head company in order to proceed. And should the head company decide to concentrate on other products and funding get cut, Nintendo would be left floating in the sewers with various other developers who have met the same fate.
If Nintendo were to go with Sony Computer Entertainment or Microsoft Games then they'd have to be the ones buying those teams, not the other way around.
> I wouldn't let Bill anywhere near my company..
You and me both.
Dunno why, but after following Nintendo for so long (nearly ten years of loyal service - never had a non-ninty console) I do feel rather personally attached. How utterly sad.
Still, I would hate to see that grinning weedy geek Bill announce his Xbox 2 was going to be even better now they've bought out Nintendo. Likewise with Sony.
