Please, unless you're one of the above, please dont spam this thread with nonsense, I just want opinions from these guys on the following:

I’ve been reading through the posts concerning how the forums have fallen recently, pointless topics etc and spamming from newbies just to get their stats up.
RBS suggested it should it based on time, not word counts and that’s cool.

I would also like to suggest that you use Moderators for the forums.
One or two people per forum that are able to monitor and/or modify posts.
Be it deleting or simply closing a thread to prevent anymore posts on something considered futile.
Be the moderators Notable or regulars that are respected and counted with expertise in particular forum topics.
For example, Sonic and Bonus are tech wizards, Grix seems to know Nintendo etc etc and I know movies and music.

I’m not saying Moderators should take over from SR web staff, it would just remove some pressure from you guys to monitor and check each thread, regulars you can trust and spend most of their day in here (being at work with nothing else to do etc) and can make sure their “allocated forum” maintains some degree of interest.

No idea if it would work, but I’ve seen moderators on other forums and it seems to work pretty well there.

Just an idea

But if all of you agree this should be done, then why can't I have my say, and when did you become so elevated to be able to ban people from posts??

Look, this is my point.

The topic heading says "Tony, Ali and Notables" and I asked for comments from just those people.
Bonus and Sonic have chipped in (whilst useful) and everyone seems to feel like they should offer their 2 pence.

Leave it, just read the damn thing and not post unless you're a Notable, Tony or SR people.

Please?

(no offence to Bonus and Sonic, I just dont want this thread buried in loads of posts with "GOod idea! Bad Idea!")

I think that in some respects the whole stats thing has lead to this drop in morale. Although my stupid little status thing is Newbie I have posted more stuff than some regulars in total just under individual accounts. I think the addition of Notables was a good idea as well as staff to direct questions to but there seems to have been some sort of Newbie v regular divide. Although the site was getting diluted more and more the blame is just being shoved in the direction of the "newbies" when in reality there is a lot of rubbish which could be cut back on by nearly everybody.

It's not "banning" anything at all.
I'm not saying that.

There have been total morons posting lately, and to be able to report it to a mod, and voila! Either thread closed or removed would stop the topic from carrying on and on.

I'm not saying I'm right or wrong, this is just an idea to pass the time at work.

You still don't seem to be getting it, this place would die without the drivel, it must make up about 85% of posts. People take the serious seriously and others don't splitting FOG was bad enough but to ban chatter from most posts is one step too far, you may as well put a sign up saying, if you're not serious, you're not getting in!!

I dont see it would be hard to pull off (chortle..oh what? I'm not allowed one smut joke? C'mon!).

It would leave Ali etc time to choose GAD and FAD and do other webby stuff without wondering what the hell is happening to forums and who's been naughty, because a Mod can do that.

The only time they'd need to get involved is when someone has a problem and they decide whether actioning is needed.
That way, there's no need to bestow any Mods with access to SR databases to remove/edit posts - Mods would simply email whoever with a problem, and then SR can do the rest.

Seems easy enough...

That's the basic premise for Mods I think.

They may not be there every day, but if you're aware that someone is checking in now and then, then it may encourage you to stick to topics etc.

And if there was a "report this post to a moderator" option, then if someone felt a posting was too much, the Mod can check it out, confer with another and refer to staff, that way there are more opinions than just one if it needs actioning.

But, more often than not,a simple warning from a Mod is enough to discourage unwanted posts.

It's not a heavy-handed "We're watching" tactic, it just allows a modicum of control and sense over the forums without SR staff having to babysit and sift through endless posts.

Mods wouldn't be there to tell people what to post and what not to post, more a "beware of dog" thing. 9/10 you wouldnt even see them, apart from their regular posts, but the knowledge that there is someone that can keep check, I think,it only beneficial.

I still think that the drivel is an important aspect to this forum, it distinguishes it from others, people can tell the difference between serious posts and people taking the mic.

If someone does ask a question, how many people can give the right answer?? One, then there is undoubted chatter.

But if you check the decent meaningful posts, the ones which are few and far between, there is usually a decent flow of thought!!
