The "General Games Chat" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
I’ve been reading through the posts concerning how the forums have fallen recently, pointless topics etc and spamming from newbies just to get their stats up.
RBS suggested it should it based on time, not word counts and that’s cool.
I would also like to suggest that you use Moderators for the forums.
One or two people per forum that are able to monitor and/or modify posts.
Be it deleting or simply closing a thread to prevent anymore posts on something considered futile.
Be the moderators Notable or regulars that are respected and counted with expertise in particular forum topics.
For example, Sonic and Bonus are tech wizards, Grix seems to know Nintendo etc etc and I know movies and music.
I’m not saying Moderators should take over from SR web staff, it would just remove some pressure from you guys to monitor and check each thread, regulars you can trust and spend most of their day in here (being at work with nothing else to do etc) and can make sure their “allocated forum” maintains some degree of interest.
No idea if it would work, but I’ve seen moderators on other forums and it seems to work pretty well there.
Just an idea
That way people who actually want to contribute to the site will be fine, and people who have nothing good to say will get several warnings, and ultimately be kicked off.

The names don't have to make sense... FOG is a legacy now, if the name is taken, it would be sacrilegioijuuus. [sp?]

I would personally miss the drivel, I quite enjoy it. If it was kept to the chatter forum then that would be easier, but FOG is the home of drivel, and splitting it last month only made the problem worse.

I think there is a difference though.
Me? I post a lot of nonsense humour-type things, but I am capable of responding in an adult manner when called for.
But, my idiot replies are limited to threads clearly not serious.
I dont like Nintendo and have nothing to offer, therefore I stay out of that forum, I dont think I've ever posted there.
I'm serious in the DVD section because, to me, I rate those more seriously than games.
We all post rubbish now and then, but at the same time, we post serious and helpful things.
A thread wouldn't be closed or deleted because it was too jokey or rambling - but there are ones that are of no use, offensive and exist only to annoy.
These are the sorts of things a moderator could check on, to become familiar with their forum and know which people generally post crap - they can be warned (politely) and would just provide some sort of method of keeping standards to a reasonable limit.
We're not saying every single post must be serious and informative, just...look at Spiders or Gurus..those are just taking up server space.

Funny that this should be the first non-constructive post in the thread then?
3 mods per forum would be better, as you'd more likely find 2 out of 3 online than 2 out of 2, so action could be taken sooner.
Maybe a zero-tolerance policy?
When somebody posts trash, simply don't respond, or respond only with a URL pointing to the rules. Soon enough, they'll realise what they're supposed to be doing!
As it stands you get trash talk between a couple, and others commenting that it's pointless garbage, then those that started it start threads apologising, then they try to start proper threads....
