The "General Games Chat" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
That was six months ago. Since then, what's happened?
About 20 new topics are created every day, about two of which are worth reading. Regulars are dropping like flies, and some of the most respected of people on the forum don't come on any more.
In my opinion, the legacy of the FOG's have fallen. We do little more than chat pointlessly now. Even the stories, which have kept me here for the past six months, seem pointless these days.
What used to be a cozy forum, with people coming on and winning games, then leaving, with the handful of regulars who were always guaranteed to turn up every night, has turned into a mass of people, all chattering with no thought for entertainment, with only a good one or two topics every day.
As I join the likes of ssxpro, Wookiee Monster, FantasyMeister, Sniper, by leaving, I make this topic not so I can flatter myself with people telling me not to leave, but I make this topic because it's important that the FOG does not get any more worse than it already is. I hope that by showing people are not interested in the FOG these days, I hope that something can be done to bring the quality of the forums back to the greatness that it once was.
But... I shall not be handing in my resignation as a notable. Make what you want of this, but I have my reasons.
Tony, Sheepy, The Game, Rasta, Edgy, Turbo, Meka, Pb, er-no, Sniper, Venombyte, Rav, Ant, Darkness, Ali, Mouldy Cheese, De Sol, Dan_uk, M16, webmaster, FM, MWA, Goatboy, Wookiee, ssxpro, Shanksy, Reaper, Terry S, Iguana, Bonus, Fogmaster, Your Honour... I bid you all farewell. I hope you can bring to this forum what seems to be missing today.
What you're suggesting, for quite a few of us, is a GAD membership. £7.50 to 'play' GAD, like a GAD membership or something.
I don't know. If we could still use the forums, but not win GAD, I'd be fine with it. I wouldn't pay, but I wouldn't be resentful about not winning GADs. It's amazingly generous as it is, and it still would be generous.
With all the talk of a forum dedicated to the people that used to make the forums a special place, I am worried that there won't be oportunities for others, like myself, who don't spam, don't post unneccessary topics, and don't clog up the forums. I for one have always tried to post properly, try and encourage and debate and put forward thought provoking opinions (as hopefully some of you will have seen if you've read my posts) yet I feel like, because I am a relative newcomer to the site, I am being included with the new 'lot' that have ruined the forums.
Don't get me wrong, I am not disputing the fact that FOG has been ruined (because it undoubtedly has) or that you guys don't dserve to be notables or haven't made the forums a great place (because again you undoubtedly have), its just that there are people out there that want to talk about games, have discussion, and have a laugh. I am 18 and don't want to get into mindless 'PS2 is crap' topics - I just want to post and most of all, have fun. I just hope some of you recognise that amidst the mire of mediocrity we currently preside in.
Win win situation really
Yesss... but think about it.
If I hadn't joined, and I

Yeah, I suppose???
We could just make it so prizes are sent to the snail mail addy given at signup?
That way even if you win the prize using a bogus number, the prize would be sent to the genuine members address??
'bear in mind I'm recoving from a shocking hangover, so my mind is just bumbling around at the moment :) )
"How about having the option to join the forums when joining for membership.."
Well yeah, if this is successful, they'll probably implement it. That's a bit far ahead yet though, let's see if Tony does this trial biz first.
"If was just that I only ever log in when SR update their servers, or I delete all my cookies, so it wouldnt be that often?"
Some of us prefer to log in by typing in our e-mail address and password though, for security reasons, and so we can log in as more than one user. It'll be awkward for those people.
And by the way, don't go on SR from a public computer. :0)
"problem is that then they would only be able to check if the winner was a memeber when the claim was made, which just wouln't work???"
Yup, wouldn't work. Imagine it.
Ali chooses a winner. Checks the person. Waits a few days. Gets a reply saying they're not a member. So he has to find a new winner. It'll get so pointless, and a huge amount of work for Ali.
"I'm sure they have a database of all the active membership numbers???"
Yesss... but think about it.
If I hadn't joined, and I wanted to pretend I had, all I needed to do was enter a random number. If I happen to hit a right chord, that isn't being used, then I'm "officially" a member. By tracking it next to the address, it's nigh on impossible.
When they ask you for your Credit Card etc..etc.. there could be an option to join the Forums then all members of the forums will have been a member.......
Awkward. You'll have to learn it, or
> write it on a piece of paper or something.
yeah, thats true, though they do give you those credit card size membership cards, they are never to hand when you need them! :)
If was just that I only ever log in when SR update their servers, or I delete all my cookies, so it wouldnt be that often?
Perhaps, but I can't remember entering my email
> address when I joined. And after all, the magazine and the gads get sent to the
> same place, right?
I was just thinking about the way they like you to mail your GAD request in using the E-Mail in your user settings box... problem is that then they would only be able to check if the winner was a memeber when the claim was made, which just wouln't work???
"or it could be a field in the 'edit user details'
> section?"
That's what I meant originally. A little message saying
> "Your ID does not match your address." Or something like that, if you
> try to enter a random number.
I'm sure they have a database of all the active membership numbers???
"You could have enter your membership number whever you log into the forums..."
Awkward. You'll have to learn it, or write it on a piece of paper or something.
"or it may be decernable via the email addy alone?"
Perhaps, but I can't remember entering my email address when I joined. And after all, the magazine and the gads get sent to the same place, right?
"or it could be a field in the 'edit user details' section?"
That's what I meant originally. A little message saying "Your ID does not match your address." Or something like that, if you try to enter a random number.
And I'm sure it won't be hard to convince them that paying £7.50 a year can result in a large amount of free games for decent writing.
AND we'll get rid of some of the idiots from around here.
The more I think about this, the more I like it.
