On the SNES they were legendary, and made some cracking RPGs (Chrono Trigger, Evermore, Mana, FF), and then the bust-up, giving the PSone a handful of FF gems to boast.

But now back on good terms with Ninty, can Square still pull it out of the bag. Crystal Chronicles was pretty good, but the repetative gameplay, poor battle system and annoying multiplayer setup left me slightly dissapointed.

FF 1-2 Dawn of Souls is schedlued for December, and there are rumours of a FF 7,8 and 9 package on the 'Cube, whilst Square have confirmed a handful of titles for the DS, including a Mana and Crystal Chronicles series.

But with games like Fable, Jade Empire and Paper Mario 2 coming out very soon, are Square still the kings of RPG and can they still produce the quality games they once did for the SNES and PSone?

Wrong game.

Animal Crossing is real time but not farming.
Harvest Moon is farming but not real time.
Take your pick.

And no, you can't pick Harvest Crossing.

Or Animal Moon.

Oww but isn’t it that real time farming game? Where you have to farm and build a house and live... sound quite tedious and boring to me, or does it have another darker side that I don’t know about?

Can you? How can you do that? Note that I have never played animal crossing so what’s it about?

I agree.

'Tis a money making scheme, and most of the classics you can play on games like Animal Crossing.

Yes and that’s why I think the NES classic idea is quite ridiculous as you have to pay 15 quid for a dated game that I played years ago. I want something new from my games (new story at least if not a new battle system).

Yes, but they were legendary games for the NES.

It's basically like a NES Classic series, but with only two games :S

It would have been good if they ported it years ago as I doubt they would have "tarted it up" as they would like to keep the classic look to it, however the first 2 where extremely poor when compared to FF 5 and 6 as they had been polished and reworked, unlike the first 4 which where basic stepping stones for the future games. Unfortunately the first 2 have no real character building and a very basic story with hardly any twist. These are the attributes that have made the FF series the best around so for me this is a quick way to earn some cash for them

Good point. I could only answer 'Mario Tennis' to that.

Well if Square are to remain kings, they are going to need to do better than Mana and Crystal Chronicles.

Fable, Jade Empire, Paper Mario 2, Symphonia and Baiten Kaitos will all be very good and deep RPGs.

FF1-2 Dawn of Souls should be a brilliant port, and two games excellent 'tarted up' games for the price of one makes sense huh?

I think the DS will put Square back on track, as they have many titles lined up for it including a Mana, Crystal Chronicles, Slim Moro Dragon and a few others.
