On the SNES they were legendary, and made some cracking RPGs (Chrono Trigger, Evermore, Mana, FF), and then the bust-up, giving the PSone a handful of FF gems to boast.

But now back on good terms with Ninty, can Square still pull it out of the bag. Crystal Chronicles was pretty good, but the repetative gameplay, poor battle system and annoying multiplayer setup left me slightly dissapointed.

FF 1-2 Dawn of Souls is schedlued for December, and there are rumours of a FF 7,8 and 9 package on the 'Cube, whilst Square have confirmed a handful of titles for the DS, including a Mana and Crystal Chronicles series.

But with games like Fable, Jade Empire and Paper Mario 2 coming out very soon, are Square still the kings of RPG and can they still produce the quality games they once did for the SNES and PSone?

Apparently not, the games just keep coming out with force.

Oww yes they would sink that low, I was very unimpressed seeing Pokemon fire red coupled with Digimon was a complete disgrace.

God, they would actually go so low as to say "lookie here folks this is a primeexample of a classic GBA game, see it while it's hot!"

Yeah it was on the screen in game as it was a video displaying new GBA games.

Well it's still bad enough that you've actually seen them in action David.

Yeah but that would just make it more like a simple point and click attack type game, or like a street fighter or even worse like the new Digimon games for GBA (which I have only seen, I don’t own them).

You could have it so the earlier trainers had poorer accuracy, and the later ones had better. Plus some random things.. like if the opposing Pokémon's accuracy stats get boosted, it could run around making it harder for you to physically hit :) Or if youre attacked badly the screen could blur making it harder for you to hit back. Just some suggestions, there could be plenty more.

Are we getting a tad obsessed with some other game, hmm?

Sure... but it could be a good idea to pinpoint attacks, but if youcould do that surely other NPC's can do that too, and they would be a lot more acurate, so maybe you need to have a difficulty setting, but that would take the fun out of the game.

Overhaul the battle system. All battles must take place in a proper little 3D arena (with obligatory camera spinning made possible).

Another idea, you could physically control your Pikmin attacking after selecting the attack from the menu - you could jab/slash your stylus in the opposing Pokémon's eyes or groin to pinpoint attacks and cause as much damage as possible. (Not that I've ever seen a hint of reproductive organs on a Pokémon however hard I've looked.. especially at those plushies I have..)
