I think the main reason is that it was supposed to be symbolic of what they were going through. Newsted leaving, James' alcohol problems and Lars' battle with Napster. Sounds quite corny I know, but I think they wanted to get some aggression out on the St Anger album. Unfortunately it sounded far too different to the Metallica everyone knew so it wasn't recieved quite as well as their previous albums.
i went off them a bit when they went a bit too mainstream, and that's not me having a "it's my game and you can't play" moment, but their sound just changed to somethign that wasn't my thing. although i do still like the occasional track and the newer stuff i've heard seems to be heading back into heavier territory again.
Pitchshifter are good and I'm partial to a bit of Machine Head occasionally.
