They really shouldn't bother though, Ford's way beyond his sell by date.

Lucas doesn't actually make the movie, that be the job of Spielberg. And although he is not as great as back then, he can still chrun out a decent offering.
Man, his career has gone all to hell since he came over to America. The film was watchable guff, most the fights though were CGI.

Exactamundo.
If Episode 1 had been like Episode 3 (some attempt at characterisation etc) then it would've been passable.
I knew it wasn't going to match the hype in my head about a new Star Wars film. I just didn't expect it to be quite so bad.
As for Episode 3's links to the original, I get the impression that Lucas read the comments about the other two and just threw stuff into the 3rd one as a last ditch attempt to not suck.
"Look, these almost look like X-wings. And here are some Wookies, ok so they have no relevance and could be any race but look, Chewbacca. And look, Tattooine with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru! Here's the same corridor from New Hope and here's Captain Antilles! See, Star Wars! It IS Star Wars after all!", before flipping his finger and stuffing more of my money into his neckpouch.

Don't know the other guy's name (Walken was in there too) but the fights were fantastic. Average story, good pacing and great fights.
Didn't feel cheated at all.
The new Star Wars films are almost as rubbish as Harrison Fords earring.

Yeah it had a lot of 'oh that's quite cool' moments but also a lot of 'well that's just bloody daft' moments too.
Enjoyable but daft, like a Jackie Chan movie.
But after watching a rather enjoyable episode 3 I was bought the DVD's of the originals. Watched them back to back. And realised how much better they were.
You are right, the characters are better, the film had more soul, a better story and faster paced.
George Lucas admitted the first 2 films were filled with padding. I thought really? And then watched them again.
Oh yeah.
Episode 3 was faster paced and more enjoyable. A lot more happened. Which was nice. And it can stand beside the original 3 as a lesser movie but only just.
The other 2 are crap... in comparison to Episode 4,5 and 6 though.
As stand alone movies, they beat a lot of the crap that hollywood produce.
