Went to an early morning showing which started at 1am this morning (which made me feel exceptionally geeky not to mention tired this morning) and speaking in the style of master Yoda, "like it you will".
George Lucas has nearly, very nearly, redeemed himself for the monumental balls-up that is EP1. The battle scenes (of which there are probably too many if you want to be overly critical, but I guess it is set during a war) are just stunning, the lightsaber fights are fantastic, and the Star Wars atmosphere is overall a bit more like the original series of films. The way the film ties all the ends together to set it up for A New Hope is also done brilliantly, and it left me with quite a satsified feeling to finally see the kind of closure we all knew was coming.
I'll leave the long-winded reviews which break down every aspect of the film in microscopic detail to others, and simply say it was a darn enjoyable film, not quite sure if you'd ever say it was better than EPs 4, 5 or 6, but it certainly dumps over EPs 1 & 2 from a very great height.

In the originals, Obi Wan gives Luke his father's lightsaber, and it's blue, so...

Not sure what you meant by that, but the last spoken words were by C-3P0. Unless I passed out or something.

If you didn't already know, Darth Vader means 'dark father' (surprising that so many people were shocked by the Empire revelation, but there you go). Perhaps it's a forebearing from Palpatine that he already knew about his children?

The rise of the Sith was clouding the visions of the Jedi, Yoda says something similar in Clones. Their ability to use the force is being depleted all the time.
Now having seen the film in all its splendour and glory, i feel obliged to share it all with you. Beware, if you have not seen it, for, though there are no "spoilers" as such, i do make reference to some potentially film ruining moments, if like myself you are a SW purirst. However, purists will have seen it, so beware those of you who enjoy the little things in films, as well as the big ones. Come to think of it, for the benefit of you readers, i have placed these at the end of the post.
So to business, i thought the film was excellent (but in fairness i thought it was very good before i had even seen it!). I loved the fights involvong Yoda, the way in which Count Dooku was "disposed of". The implication of the death of the younglings was cleverly done, presumably to prevent the certificate from being 15+.
Gotta love the four armed surprise unleashed by "the King of all that is droid", shame he could fight for carp though! The hilarious consequences of Order 66 being issued. The abundance of lightsabre duals, if i remember correctly there were 5. (Ani+Obi/Dooku, Obi/Droid, Windu/Sidious, Yoda/Sidious, Vader/Obi)
There were however certain aspects of this masterpeice that made me shake my head in the direction of Mr. Lucas. Why oh why would you give the two main characters the same colour lightsabre? It just makes difficult viewing and would have been so much easier if Obi/Ani had a green one, especially in the final battle.
You would have thought that if one of the ways Palpy revealed himself to Ani was through the revelation of the knowledge of his marriage, surely something musta been going on for Obi to know and Yoda not to (unless Yoda was being sly).
Although in the future, when kids see the fims in order, the full impact of the famous words from The Empire Strikes back, won't be as great, as we know about Anakin/Vader being Luke's pop already. Still this film rescued the Anakin/Padmé trilogy in my opinion and though the first two weren't as good as the ones in the Vader/Luke trilogy, Episode three is, and could well be better.
Y'all must also remember that this film would seem a little contived as it couldnt have a freeflowing story line as it is an inbetween film. still rocked though.
Purist moments:
Is Windu (Leroy!!) a better sabre dualis than Yoda? Windu could have killed Palpy if he hadnt been faffin' about but Yoda never had the chance, although i guess Yoda is the king of Force usage. And you cant say that Palpy was tricking Windu as he was properly buggered by the lightning reflect and there was no way he coulda stopped a slashin in Windu weren't a big talker).
The magically evil was Palpy tricks Vader into making him think he killed Padmé when he knew he didnt (directly). Interesting how this issue is never resolved in any future film.
I personally liked the fact that the last words ever to be spoken in a Star Wars film were not Skywalker, Yoda, Kenobi, Vader or any of that malarkey, but Qui Gonn. He was a great Jedi, one of the more unorthodox Masters who spotted the "potential" of young Ani.
We got to see Chewie!
The was when Dooku is killed you can still see the difference in sabre stye of him and most Jedi (his fencing, the rest spinning) when Ani has both.
There were some properly tacky bits though, the naming of the children sequnce for example, when Padmé just plucks the names out of the Force, and then is unable to give her final words, and then kicks the proverbial bucket.
Also tacky was the "Becoming of Darth Vader". What exactly does Vader mean? And why was he not Count Vader, like Count Dooku, Sidious' previoud apprentice. Or maybe the question is why was it not Lord Dooku?
How cone only Yoda could sense the deat of so many Jedi, you would at lewast have thought that other Council members at least would know of it occuring. Especially the one with the huge head (i forget his name right now). And on the subject of sensing, why couldn't Obi Wan sense the fall of Ani, why did he need to see a hologram video.
Why was there a security holo-vid of the arrest of Palpatine in the Jedi Temple, if he wasnt arrested there?
When sneakin onto the ship, how did Padmé and Threepio not notice Obi-Wan on a pre-flight scan?
When the ship's glass was destroyed in space, how did Obi and Ani escape and not suffocate (one assumes some kind of Force breath hold and other force abilities but why not show it to us George?)
Loved how as the helmet goes on, Vader looks just like he does on Return Of The Jedi when Luke takes off his helmet, that was ace.
Or did she mean her step mother? (seen at the
> end of ROTS?).
Nah, that was Luke's stepmother at the end. The showing I came from had a fair ammount of laughs, namely from R2D2's nutty antics at the start, and Darth Vader's "Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!".
R4D4 getting decapitated made me chuckle, aswell.
