It appears they are not nearly as big as they deserve to be and I am using them as a perfect opportunity to promote a great band that didn't break it big. I think it's ridiculous that I hadn't heard of these guys, yet there is tons and tons of crap on any "chart" in the UK.
Having got and listened to, fully, their second album (With the Tides - 2003), I can tell you that they are brilliant. They're quite mixed and remind me of many bands as well as having a style I can't link to others.
As an example the first song on this album has a drum rhythm I would associate with Drum and Bass or far heavier rock, but instead it merges quite well with a pleasant vibrant style, not too heavy or overly bassy at all. Through out the album, there are some really brilliant and beautiful riffs and arpeggios accompanied by some really pure and provocative singing. The lyrics aren't amazingly good, but they accompany the music well.
I haven't received my order of their first album yet, but it's supposed to be even better. I just can't wait.
So remember the name, South.

Good good good good good. We have fairly similar tastes anyway, so I doubt you'll be disappointed. Post your thoughts in here when you get it...
They're so hard to categorize (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), they're rocky mixed in places with electronica and verging on prog-rock at times too. I've now got both albums and although "With The Tides" is indeed excellent, I don't believe it can surpass the sublime brilliance of From Here On In. I've had it for about 4 weeks now and it's only left my CD player once (and that was only to lend it to the friend who originally played me Paint The Silence). Although the individual songs on it are quality themselves (like those mentioned), it really needs to be appreciated as a whole. With 16 tracks clocking in at around 75 mins it's a big but beautiful album. I really suggest investing the small amount of money it costs into it (it's 5 years old and I got it for about 6 quid) as it's without a doubt the best album I've heard in a long time.
