It appears they are not nearly as big as they deserve to be and I am using them as a perfect opportunity to promote a great band that didn't break it big. I think it's ridiculous that I hadn't heard of these guys, yet there is tons and tons of crap on any "chart" in the UK.
Having got and listened to, fully, their second album (With the Tides - 2003), I can tell you that they are brilliant. They're quite mixed and remind me of many bands as well as having a style I can't link to others.
As an example the first song on this album has a drum rhythm I would associate with Drum and Bass or far heavier rock, but instead it merges quite well with a pleasant vibrant style, not too heavy or overly bassy at all. Through out the album, there are some really brilliant and beautiful riffs and arpeggios accompanied by some really pure and provocative singing. The lyrics aren't amazingly good, but they accompany the music well.
I haven't received my order of their first album yet, but it's supposed to be even better. I just can't wait.
So remember the name, South.

Yeah but the O.C's gay. That is a fundamental concept that I think needs to be grasped.
Paint The Silence and Loosen Your Hold are the only two songs that people will know. Only Paint The Silence has any tabs anywhere on the Internet. Thing about them is that people will hear their songs think it's good then just forget all about them, they simply don't have any mainstream penetration.

Heh. I know.
:D
Although I will just add that I think Colours in Waves is oneof their top 5 songs, but down already had it...

Only one different mon frais :-)
I love both albums, just I love From Here On In that wee bit more. Probably only because I got it first and it has Paint The Silence and Here On In on it... and it's longer allowing me to bask in the South brilliance for 15 mins longer.
I was torn between suggesting both Natural Disasters and Loosen Your Hold because they're two versions of one song, thought I'd play it safe and suggest something else :-)
Like Amnesiac and these 2 South albums, etc.
Seeing as Colour in Waves was my first song, you maybe more atuned to the With the Tides Faction (WTT), where as Rasta is part the From Here On In (FHOI) Clan.
:D
FHOI is more critically acclaimed, but there's no reason I can see that the 2 albums aren't equally good.
I suggest if you're like me you'll prefer:
Motiveless Crime - my download of the day.
Loosen Your Hold
Paint the Silence
From Here On In
Natural Disasters
However, having said this. I strongly suggest you get both albums, because if you really like Colours in Waves like I did, you won't regret your decision one jot.
