Which is the best, in your opinion, kind of room to have:
Normal/halls
Cluster blocks (6-8 rooms and shared bathroom/kitchen)
Cluster blocks with en-suite (for those scared to poo in a shared bathroom)
Off-campus house (generally cheaper I think but more travel)
Thanks a lot in advance.
I assumed I'd get to know the people in my halls though. *shrugs*
Thanks for the advice Phi11ip.

But where are you gonna make friends if you just move into your own house? The point of everyone going into halls in the first year is to meet people. The friends you make in halls will stay with you throught the whole of Uni.
But then, you can have your mates over whenever, have undignified parties totally inebriated, that include funnel like contraptions, guitar jam sessions, auditions for the Gay Titanic.. Of course, you get to study in peace too..that's important.
You can be totally independent and hey, it's less expensive. What a bargain!
Some people still need a structured environment though, whether it's because of the fear of being alone or just the mere inability to provide for one's self. It does take a bit more self-efficacy (for lack of a better term for "maturity") to handle a household, opposed to being a part of a enclive. Not to insinuate anything here, but perhaps you might just consider On-campus for the first year just to check it out and then gage whether it's for you or not. It's all a part of the uni experience anyways.
Then you move into a house on your second year with friends you make and it's all good.
I want to cook for myself (the whole independence thing y'know) and acquire a life skill. I don't want to be wined and dined like it was some posh hotel. I want to be scummy.
> Is the halls only for catered accomodation then?
Depends on the university :)
The Halls I'll be staying in are self catered.
I can cook pretty well so maybe I'd be best having the kitchenny bit?
Yeah, there's a communal "bath area" between about 6 of us, but there's two showers and I've never had problems with it... but maybe I've got low standards.
I've found that unless you're a good cook who knows how to make a good meal out of cheap ingredients then Halls tend to be cheaper.
I like Halls so much I've managed to worm my way into a second year there atleast. :-)
Meh.
