Got my form to fill in for accomodation for uni which is a little unnerving, its the final step in a lot of ways I suppose. Just wanted to get a bit of feedback from those of you already at a uni.

Which is the best, in your opinion, kind of room to have:

Normal/halls

Cluster blocks (6-8 rooms and shared bathroom/kitchen)

Cluster blocks with en-suite (for those scared to poo in a shared bathroom)

Off-campus house (generally cheaper I think but more travel)

Thanks a lot in advance.

Catered halls are nice.

I wouldn't recommend commuting to anyone, ever.

I'm going to sussex, so everything is on campus and self catering (although there are a lot of cafes and stuff, natch). I chose a shared house type thing en suite as my first choice, then a sort of small flat with a kitchen bathroom and 4-6 rooms. There aren't any halls as such, so I picked somewhere with a communal place so that you could make friend with the people you live with and spend some time together. There's always the SU for making friends and whatnot. It's different for you city uni guys, but I have to move out to Brighton for my 2nd and 3rd years, which will be interesting, to say the least.

I think most people get kicked out of the halls for the first year, it's some sort of policy.

The accomodation at Central Lanc is like a minute away from the Business School where the journalism rooms are. So that is nice & easy :-)

I'd personally hate to go into a shared house for the first year.

At least with the halls, everyone is in the same boat as you, you meet new people, even ones who don't do your course.

With being in a house, I can imagine it being sort of 'encapsulated', only a select few people to meet etc

Meh, I'm not one to judge, never experienced it myself, but I'm going in the halls.

We get kicked out after the first year anyway.

I have that option at York, seeing as there is accomodation right next to the place where most of my lectures will take place, but I dont know whether I'd rather have a bit of a walk in a morning, might be much more sociable...

Cluster blocks with en-suite (as long as you get on with your block mates)

I got a house instead of going to halls. It was harder to make friends, but not impossible. Just make friends with one or two people on your course and then you make friends with their friends, and their friends and so on and so on.

Getting a shared house is cool, so long as you share with people the same age as you. All my house mates are older and not at all sociable. With some halls, you need to vacate for Christmas and Easter which is just anoying. If you get a job, it means you can work throughout Easter if you decided being at Uni is much more entertaining than being at home. Living in a house also means that you don't need to cart all your stuff home for Christmas and Easter, obviously this will be much easier if you have someone willing to drive you to and from Uni 3 times a year. You'll most proberly need to find off-campus accomodation eventually.

But, saying all that, I do wish I had lived in halls, afterall thats all part of being at Uni.

Getting up 5 mins before a lecture and strolling in there on time is great.

Even better if you're a student.

I applied for Halls this autumn when I go to Hertfordshire.. mainly because I'm wanting my own en-suite and don't want the hassle of travel every day to my lectures.

Maybe if you're better at getting up in the morning than me the last part isn't necessary, I dunno :)
