Him: "You'll probably be worried to hear that some black ones had a look in next door yesterday."
Me: "'Black' whats?" (already knowing where this is heading...)
Him: "Two black people"
Me: "You mean two people?"
Him: "Well you may not realise this but they have a penchant for staying up all night, being loud and playing loud music all day and night"
Me: "So you'll be voting for the BNP in the next election then?"
Him: "I don't even know what you're talking about"
Me: "British National Party"
Him: "Don't talk down to me"
That's more or less word-for-word what he said, only I was probably more macho than the scene suggests. I scuttled off to the study shortly after.
I'm quite shocked actually, at how blatant he was with it. I've seen him make "Ook ook ook" sounds when we've driven past a black person before, but I thought that was his attempt at being funny, not trying to drill massive racism into me.
In my primary school I only ever noticed one black person in the year above me, and I'm pretty sure there's almost none living in the village.
When I go into Newton Mearns though for school, there's loads of black people. I heard that something like 40% of Glasgow's immigrants actually live in East Renfrewshire.
I don't know where down stays in Glasgow, but unless there is a high rise block of flats or a further education college nearby, it's entirely feasible he's not seen any local black people. Not racism, merely fact.
> Black people are really very rare in Glasgow as well, it's shameful

You having a laugh? Head out towards sighthill and you'll see loads.
> Black people are really very rare in Glasgow as well
You should collect them and sell them on E-bay
> I love bucking stereotypes.
Me too.
Oh wait - you said "bucking".

Is this Wales or Walden? I've never, ever, ever seen a black person in Walden. Until today when I shared a cab with two, and I organised the sharing too, which makes me extra special. Yar.
I usually just stop paying attention and when i hear the noise has stopped in the background I just give him a routine *of course dad* when he's finished. Wonder what he would have said about my black girlfriend i had over in Seattle. Ah well
The racism of oldies is so instinctive that it's difficult to tell when there's real malice there.
