Apparently, the Xbox's hard disk is only going to be only 8MB, which, compared to PS2's 40MB, seems pretty paltry.

I should have known that! Just had an IT exam!!!! DOH! Anyway, the idea I was trying to get accross is that textures can be loaded from the HDD for example, whereas sound can be streamed from the DVD.

These files will be stored only when the game is running... otherwise they will just not be addressed by the memory manager (for those with technical minds). The textures etc will then be loaded onto the HDD when a new game is put in... it's not like INSALLING- the Xbox is not a PC!

Well, that could be where the space is taken up then.

You must have loads of games as well, i dont really have much time to play games at the moment, so i dont have many installed.

MP3's, Office 2000, Visual Studio 6, video capture software + videos, and one 10Gb partition practically full of games (yes, originals!), plus other bits and pieces.

Admitedly I do have a few CD's (Win98SE, Office) copied to the HD for installation, so that I don't need to keep putting CD's in for installations etc...

I've got 20GB in 5 partitions.

I've got about 6 gig of MP3. A couple of gig of games and programs, and a couple of stuff i've downloaded from the 'net.

20 is enough for me for now. I'm going to put on Win200 in a couple of weeks, not sure if that takes up more room than '98 or not.

What have you got that takes up so much space!?!

Man, how do you manage with that? I have 42Gb in 6 partitions, and I still have to juggle occasionally!

I have my entire CD collection stored as MP3's - that takes 6.6Gb alone! Then there's the games, Office 2000, Visual Studio, plus all my other software...

When I get my new Maxx, I'm going for the 2nd drive option so I'll have around 80Gb+.

HD space and RAM... the two things you can never have enough of in a computer.

Not true! As soon as CD drives got faster than 40 speed, it is quicker to load stuff off of that than a 5,400 rpm Hard drive.

The only way it would be quicker for the XBox to load off the HDD is if it is 7,200 (possible), 10,400 rpm (unlikely as they are so damn expensive!), OR the XBox drive is slower than 40x.

2) The 8Gb drive is still HUGE! The PC I

If a game comes on a DVD, it could be up to 6.4GB (i think). Say it installs 2GB onto the HDD, you can only install 4 games onto an 8GB drive. Most people have more than 4 games..... don't they?

I've made a few assumptions in what i've said, so it may not be exaclty spot on, but you can get the general idea...

The drive is 40Gb, but don't worry - all HD's are physically the same size! (Well, except the slimline versions in laptops etc.) It will be a 3.5-inch model, and will fit in the expansion bay at the back of your PS2.
