But the Liverpool Echo has said Anfield boss Rafa Benitez will avoid a bidding war and instead turn his attentions to Nicolas Anelka. Real are believed to still want £7m before selling Morientes.
Reports suggest Liverpool will lift their offer to £5m - the highest they are willing to go before bowing out of any deal. Benitez could yet turn his attentions to the younger Anelka should Morientes be reluctant to pledge his future to Liverpool, even tho he is already praising Liverpool and how he'd love to play for us.
It's still a little much for a "little known" Spaniard, though, wouldn't you say...?
Where's Gerrard on that list, eh? :)
Stevie code:
Regular Stevie - Stevie
Stevie 2 - Stevie Warnock
Stevie 3 - Stevie Finnan
Fat Stevie - Neil Mellor
Djibril Cisse - £14 million
Xabi Alonso - £10.5 million
Josemi - £2 million (Why? Rafa, just tell us WHY?)
Luis Garcia - £6 million
Then we only recouped a measly £8 million for Mikey Owen. Steal of the century. OK, century's only been going 4 years. Still. Dirty Spanish. We hate the Spanish. Except the one's at Liverpool and Morientes, of course (that's excluding Josemi..waste of space)
I'm just thinking the board will be a little reluctant to sanction £7 million. But from what the media say, I get the impression everyone at Anfield is really impressed with Benitez. So who knows? I don't think I'm alone in the Liverpool fanworld in wanting a player of Morientes' calibre.
I know there's been all this talk this year over various proposed takeovers and that but, I'd have never thought they could be worse-off than many others around them, so I can't see why matching the £7m valuation would be so hard?
Then again, I guess you don't want to give into to the biggest clubs too easily, do you. And they must have their own valuations on a 'surplus to requirements' Spanish international who can score goals, spending his season wasting away on the subs' bench.

You absolute fool, the whole point of a football transfer is to get a player for as little as possible. Yes I'd like Morientes for £40m please. We aren't cheapskates, we just simply don't have the money. And now that Morgan has done one. We are screwed...Bring on the Hollywood people
I'll give you Kewell though.
Morientes is old. He'll replace Shearer for like 3 years? Then they'll have to buy someone else.
