Ok, put a similar topic in the xbox/windows forum but hey.
Broadband being installed tomorrow, and I need some advice re networking and I dont have clue 1 about doing it - so advice is welcome:

A wireless router, plugs into the cable modem from NTL and my pc will feed off this.
So I need a wireless network card then?
My machine already has a Compaq Netelligent 10 T/2 PCI UTP/Coax Controller - would this be one?

So I get a card and plug NTL into the router and voila, I'm away?

Good to see you're prepared. It's one of those things that: -

1) Will work first time, or more likely,
2) Will frustrate the merry hell out of you.

Good luck. Fingers crossed you get no 1.

Thanks.
I've had to go with wireless because "I don't want wires all over my house", despite the fact that the dialup I currently use means?...wire downstairs.
It's a USB thingy that installed easy-peasy, and a wireless router from SR (GG8806 code).

So I get them to initially set it upstairs in my room on my desktop, then put the modem into the router back downstairs and try to set up a wireless network.
I'll no doubt be looking for moron-assist whilst I do that, so expect a redfaced techspaz an hour after NTL leave and I have to physically restrain myself from attacking the modem like an enraged gorilla.

Really? That's me told. :D

Still a total noob regarding broadband and wireless. Spent about 4 hours yesterday trying to set up a netgear modem / router. Gave up in disgust. Voyager 205 seems to be connecting to countersrike servers now, so I'm happy.

I game over wireless.. 54G+ (108Mbps), absolutley no difference in ping or lag than using wires.

As for 20ft... I get a 50% signal at 1.5Km from my house, 25% signal strength at 5Km!! (Have a rather expensive antenna)

Unfortunatley, I am..;) But have a harmonious relationship between my techhie side and the wife. I spen a fortune on stuff like this, she stay's well out of it as long as i buy her pointless things like hair strightners and bread makers. THough was surprised when she came home the other week demanding a 48" Digital TV for the living room... She's learning!;)

NTL will do the inital setup using your desktop PC and the NTL Modem. Don't let them do this using the USB connection, instead, make sure they use the network connection instead (RJ45 - big phone plug looking thing). The biggest bonus being that of your PC dies, fter a reinstall, you won;t need to worry about the modem

Once that's done with and your registered with NTL. take the modem and plug it into the router, turn it all on and forget about it.

Personally, I'd go for a PCI card based Wireless adapter for the desktop. Should be a case of opening up your PC, slot the card in, install software (though SP2 doesn't need this, in theroy) and let it locate the router.

Was going to go into layman's terms for this, but got lost a "big box B with lots of holes";)

It's actually very simple, just ignore all things referencing WEP, SIS ID etc until you need to.

Yeah, the girlfriend uses a wireless for a laptop downstairs. Fine for her Uni work browsing, but I couldn't use it for online gaming. Wired is always going to be better.

Yeah you got the hang of it Goaty. Your Compaq Netelligent thing is a Network Interface Card (NIC). You could run a cable from the back of the computer to the router if you wanted, that's what Tyla is basically saying.

I take it you have or are getting a wireless adapter of some sort for your PC? I'd recommend ones you fit inside the computer itself, but USB ones will work. Without knowing what one it is I can't be specific, but you plug the wirless adapter thing into your PC, probably install some software, then it starts looking for a wireless connection to leech onto. It ought to find your router downstairs and then you'll need some account information and stuff.

EDIT - I think Tyla is married, in which case he'll be beyond help.

NIC port? Buh?

Huh?
I was going to:
Let NTL blokes run line into house downstairs, plug router in down there.
Set my USB network thingy on my PC up here in my room, then go online and download lots of porn and heavy metal MP3s.
I don't need the USB?

Look, I know I know nothing about this crap so I appreciate the help. If you could speak slowly and clearly so that a techmong like myself gets it, then I'll gladly help you get laid.

Have XBOX/PC/Laptop/NTL set up at home... Goes like this:

Modem into Router
Desktop PC, wired into Router
Laptop - Wi-fi PCMICA card to Router
XBOX - Wired to Router though also have a WI-Fi adapter for the XBOX too.

Most PC's have a NIC port as standard now, same as XBOX, so should just be a ces of wire it all up, switch on modem > Router > PC > XBOX and all should be hunky dory.

FWIW... DONT USE USB!! You won;t even need to install the NTL modem, just register the account by setting up the modem directly to you PC at first, once registered, set up router etc and restart everything and all should be working fine.
