Broadband being installed tomorrow, and I need some advice re networking and I dont have clue 1 about doing it - so advice is welcome:
A wireless router, plugs into the cable modem from NTL and my pc will feed off this.
So I need a wireless network card then?
My machine already has a Compaq Netelligent 10 T/2 PCI UTP/Coax Controller - would this be one?
So I get a card and plug NTL into the router and voila, I'm away?
Why the hell was I a dialup mong for so long?
I haven't spoken to them for months and months, shame 'cos now I can play just as badly as them.
My PC is not wireless connected, modem goes straight into my pc at the mo, I'm just playing with speed.
And this page loaded in under a second...sweet speedy sextime.
Cheers for the idiot guide, I'm printing that off and shall go have a faaag and study wot you wrote before setting up the router so that ma can use the net on hers downstairs.
I forsee many many hours of gaming tonight, despite a 3:30am wake up call
If the engineer leaves one of your computers connected to the internet, immediately shut it down when he leaves, then disconnect it from the NTL box/reconnect it to the router (you will probably need to restart the computer so it re-acquires its network settings). Take the lead coming from the NTL box (that the NTL guy had previously plugged into your computer) and connect it to your router. There will be a special socket for it to go in, which should be physically seperate from all the others and probably marked WAN/Internet/Uplink, or similar. Restart the NTL box (just flick the wall switch off + on, with a small pause in-between) as it'll still think it's talking to the computer it was previously plugged into. Restart the router as well, to be sure.
Give the NTL box a couple of minutes to collect it's thoughts, then visit one of your machines. Trying to visit a random website should not work, even though everything is plugged in. This is because NTL have an authentication system for their broadband network - at the moment, only the computer that was used to test the connection is authenticated to connect, and the NTL box is clever enough to know that it's not plugged into that computer any more, it's plugged into your router instead. What you have to do is authenticate your router as a seperate computer. To do this, visit www.ntlworld.com - although other websites won't work, this will take you to an authentication page. You will need your connection id and password (which should be somewhere near the top of one of the letters NTL sent you - if you can't find it, the NTL guy will be able to write them down for you). Progress through the authentication system, it's quite self-explanatory. When it asks you for a computer name, just make one up - "router" is what I used to use. Don't worry about trying to manually add all the computers in your house, your NTL box only needs to know about the router. Once you have added your router as a known computer, you can either go on to register for your webspace and stuff (I never bothered).
As soon as you have added your router as a known computer, you can enable your connection by resetting your NTL box (you will probably want to reset both your router and computer(s) at the same time). Once you do all that, it *should* work.
If you get into trouble and need to get back online to scream at us or something, you should be able to reconnect the NTL box to the computer that the engineer used to test the connection with. However, anytime you change the device the NTL box is plugged into, the box will need resetting, so you'll need to do this.

Heh, sweet. You got number one.
I'm sure the rest will be plain sailing, when (if) the engineer arrives. Hear that regular sharp cracking sound? That's the seconds ticking away that is........
Set it up last night and the network was fine, just couldn't configure the router etc without NTL details.
They're coming today between 12-6pm.
It's now 3pm and I'm getting fidgety
two, both wireless
one wired, one wireless
That Compaq jobbery you mentioned is indeed a network card (or NIC, if you like Moonspeak) and you should be able to run a CAT5 network cable between it and your router which, settings permitting, will allow them to talk to each other. However it's unlikely to be a wireless network card, which you will need if you want your computer to communicate with your router sans wires. You will need a wireless network card installed in each of your computers you plan to connect wirelessly to your router, and these are quite expensive.
Do you have your router already? Setting it up to talk to your computers in advance of the NTL installation might be handy.

It is cable BB isn't it? Not via a BT phone socket? If it's pure cable, you'll be fine (I think, but don't quote me)
"That router from SR does NOT have an ADSL modem in it. If you have cable, then no worries, it doesn't matter. If you do have ADSL then you will need an extra modem because a USB modem will not connect to it. "
??????
NTL put broadband into my house.
I buy router.
I play online via wireless, I happy.
OR
NTL put broadband into my house.
I buy router
Router not work and I stomp back to Sawbo SR shop and hurl it like dung at the slow-talking assistant that sold me it with the assurance "it'll work with NTL mate"
