Ok, put a similar topic in the xbox/windows forum but hey.
Broadband being installed tomorrow, and I need some advice re networking and I dont have clue 1 about doing it - so advice is welcome:

A wireless router, plugs into the cable modem from NTL and my pc will feed off this.
So I need a wireless network card then?
My machine already has a Compaq Netelligent 10 T/2 PCI UTP/Coax Controller - would this be one?

So I get a card and plug NTL into the router and voila, I'm away?

If you're behind a router inbound connections cannot reach you no matter what (unless either the router or another computer behind it get compromised), so the only reason you need a firewall is to control outgoing connections. If you have XP service pack two, the built in firewall with that is more than adequate. Personally I don't bother.

Currently NTL's limit is about 1GB/day. After January, with the new speed increases this will vary (there was a post here not so long ago about it)

Iirc the 3Mb will be capped at 40Gb/month so about 1.2Gb/day which is plenty.

**Only 4 weeks till I see my beautiful 3Mb!!**
whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh!;)

Very true. I connected via a modem, with winxp Sp1, and my machine was crippled within ten minutes. I was downloading virus protection at the time. Popup after popup.

Oh, on a side note, check out the amount of intrustions you get when playing "Isketch". I thought bonzi buddy was dead and gone. Nope.

You could have the best of both worlds and leave a download overnight.

Hurrah, I shall uninstall it then - it's causing nothing but trouble.
And Zone Alarm is installed, so I'm pretty safe.

Broadband rules.
Now, do I sleep because I'm up at 03:30 for work...or do I enjoy this fastloading wonderland?...hmmm
