After Mike Riley's performance (*cough* crap *cough*) do we have ANY decent in the Premiership AT ALL?
What's happened to Collina joining from the Italian league?

And umpires don't? They know exactly where the incident will be, and can focus entirely on that point.

Umpires have under 1/4 of a second to see an event...

Referees have far more time to see something build up, the exact angle of entry into a tackle/handball, etc.

Referee has far more area to cover with the game moving at a far faster pace over a wider area.

Riiiight. Well backed up there. You blew me out of the water with all those examples.


I would point out the similarities again as being:

Umpire/referee both roughly same distance away.

Umpire/referee both don't have aid of TV.

Umpire/referee both get harassed when making decisions.



Differences:

Umpire has 4X faster speed of incident.

Umpire gets far more decisions right than referee.

Of course we don't have any good referee's. Mike Riley is considered the best ref in England, that says it all really.

Maybe they should consider trying a video ref at big games for a while. We screamed blue murder when they introduced it into Rugby League but it works very well.

And no one please state the obvious that this is a completely different game.

The only way the refs are going to improve is if they have replays which will probably never happen.

Whether it's LBW, caught behind or a no ball they seem to get it right an uncanny amount of times.
