Can FAD be setup to use a proxy? And if not, is there any way to manually download the WUs?

The team at the top has contributed 522 years, not sure of the total for all teams and individuals but compared to SETI's 2,087,912 years it's pathetic (unfortunately). Which is very sad really, as either far more people are interested in finding aliens than finding a cure for malaria, cancer, HIV etc or the people who run FAD aren't doing a very good job at finding new (and keeping) users and promoting their project. Or perhaps encouraging users to promote it for them. Would much change if tomorrow to go with the 8,397 an additional 100,000 users signed up and ran FAD on their machine(s) 24/7?

Right, well I've gone around breaking FAD all over my network in an attempt to recreate some of this.

To bring the system tray icon back, then in start > programs > FAD click control panel, then when it brings up the box, click save. The system tray icon is back. The other way of doing it is to run tray.exe in the FAD folder on the hard drive.

I'll investigate a bit more.

Yeah the icon in the system tray, it wont appear anymore, so I can't right click it and check the queue or job info. I think Nimco experienced the same problem.

Did you restart before uninstalling Nimco? You see, the only time queue is unavailable is when you don't have server.exe running, as that is the queue part of FAD. You wouldn't even needed to have restarted, merely starting server.exe would have done, but a restart of Windows would have started server again.

FAD does work behind a proxy, the most common issue with it under Windows and with a proxy being people setting Internet Explorer to Work Offline, which of course stops the proxy components that FAD uses. I can't remember what proxy components are used under Linux.

So in what way wasn't it working FLCL? Yeah, it has now upgraded to V1.25C, but that happens automatically if you don't stop it. And icons? Where? Unless you make them, it won't put any on the desktop, or do you mean the one in the system tray?

As for the stats, they've been working fine for ages. They update 4 times a day normally, at approx 00:00, 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00. When the update runs you might see 0 next to teams daily and weekly production totals. This is no different from any other project, as a database has to be updated at some point. I use the www.find-a-drug.co.uk server as it is hosted in Britain and so works fastest.

As a final note, if you are sick of FAD because you have problems with it, then really don't try SETI. SETI2 as it were, the version that uses BOINC is unreliable at the moment and has issues with the stats as in it often takes a week or more to be credited for a job. If you do that is. SETI Classic is due to finish soon, but it too has been having issues with dealing jobs out. A lot of people have left SETI lately due to their growing unreliability, and quite a few were annoyed at them asking for money especially with the big list of sponsors they have.

yeah I might try SETI, I'm fed up of this program not working properly and every time I try and check the stats on the site they page is always down for some reason. I wonder how many Gflops that one job would have been ah well.

I had that - uninstalled and reinstalled again and it has been OK since. I think I'm gonna change to SETI or something though cos I know that works from behind the proxy.

The version I am using is 1.24g, they must have released the new on the same day or something.

Just installed the new version, same thing happening again, no icons anywhere but the programs are running in the background.

I quit FAD again, there's something wrong with the program, first it wouldnt run properly and I had to restart the computer several times, then after many days of having the computer on I restarted the computer and the icons for the programs never came up. They were still on in the background of the computer but I had no control over them anymore, endless restarting the computer, end tasking them and starting again, it just wouldnt work. I had one job with 4 days and 715 hits at 90% done. Really ticks me off.

Nope - just the Queue option on the right-click taskbar menu is greyed out.

If memory serves me correctly it uses the proxy settings it finds in Internet Explorer or Outlook Express if it needs to.

What is happening? Any error messages?
