Also, the FAD setup file, did you just download it, or are you using the same one you originally downloaded? If it was a partially corrupted setup file (hey it could happen) then running the same setup file would always cause a problem.
The current beta, 1.25G is likely to be made a full release on Thursday anyway. So you could always try it instead. It wouldn't explain what is wrong, but the best I can think of.
Let me uninstall it one more time, I'll see what's left in the FAD folder too.
Okay first, clicking on uninstall an error comes up saying
'[SDELET](10563)Deletion of file recent.lis failed'
'[SDELET](10563)Deletion of file server.dat failed'
'[SDELET](10563)Deletion of file server.log failed'
'[SDELET](10563)Deletion of file molecule.lis failed'
'[SDELET](10563)Deletion of file temp.ljgo failed'
'[SDELET](10563)Deletion of file jobs.html failed'
As you install, when the control panel comes up for you to put your details in, what do you click? Stupid question I suppose, but I'm just trying to establish an exact chain of events. I click save and then the control panel closes on its own.
Why does THINK keep doing these upgrade things every once and awhile? What are they? Sucks that it or Windows has a problem and wont let me run it properly.
I guess the fact that the problem is still there hints that every last trace of FAD wasnt removed, but I uninstalled and deleted those files. What have I missed :(
Anyway. What I would do is remove FAD via the control panel. Then go into My Computer > C > Documents and Settings > (account)* > Start Menu > Programs > Startup. Check there are no files relating to FAD, be it THINK.lgo, or shortcuts to tray.exe or think.exe or whatever.
* There will be an all users folder, probably a Mark folder etc. Check them all in this manner.
Now go to start, run, type regedit and hit enter. I don't know if you've ever editted the registry before, I'll assume not. This is quite an important piece of Windows, so don't mess around with things.
In the left hand pane, click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then Find-A-Drug. Just hit delete. At the "Are you sure you want do delete this key and all of its subkeys?" click OK. This removes the last trace of FAD from the computer. Of course, if Windows wasn't retarded it would be removed properly anyway. It is the registry entries that save the old Phoenix team number and stuff.
Now exit the Registry Editor, you'll probably be asked to save changes, select yes. I would now restart the machine. Once a reboot is completed, run Windows update, maybe do a scandisk, disk clean-up, defragment, all the usual maintenance stuff. At this point you have a nice, tip-top condition machine with no trace of FAD on it. Download the latest FAD setup from the website, FADV125C.exe I think it is called, then run it. At that point just install it. Pick the options you want. I wouldn't run beta if I were you, not a good idea. Then click save, whilst you are online.
And the last thing of note regarding internet, from Vester's FAD FAQ:
"As concluded by NIKUS, it is necessary that Internet Explorer 5.x or 6.0 be installed and online. Working offline will prevent connection to the internet by Find-a-Drug (fadsetup.exe and server.exe). These comments are for Windows users. I am running Windows XP Home Edition. "
By online, Vester means NOT set to work offline. It doesn't mean you need Internet Explorer open to run FAD.
If you follow all of these steps, FAD should work. I can't think of any case where FAD would have incompatibilities of any sort with hardware, meaning that if it still fails to run, then the Windows installation has something wrong with it. Which, being a Microsoft product, is often the case.
bRAINdEAD is the username of a dutch (I think she was dutch) girl I use to talk to back in 1996. A very interesting unique girl who I enjoyed talking to many times. I was reminded of her the other day and so used the name. I wonder what she's up to now. Very attractive girl too.
If you do have them checked, and you just keep getting Proteome, well that I can't explain. Make sure you can actually download other jobs though by clicking the receive button on the job queue window. That would allow you to download either HIV or cancer jobs, or at least it should.
As for the CPU rating increase... well a few things affect it. The load on the PC at the time of the benchmark being run being an important one. I don't imagine the ratings have stayed at that constantly. I once had a one off rating of 420. I was really chuffed, but it didn't last for long. There were a combination of factors there, but mainly what happened if I remember right was that whilst the benchmark was running, something else processor intensive started running. Most of the benchmark had been run already, and when it finished it seemed to take just a bit longer than usual but with a huge load at the time. This was a next to unreapeatable feat.
Another possibility for it is further evidence of the growing parity between Windows and Linux scores. There had been some anomalies in the past, but credit to Keith and Co, they appear to be getting there. Perhaps they've been raising Windows scores slighly to compensate for Linux. I really don't know to be honest though Mark, I can only offer ideas.
I think the first certificate for GFLOPS is at 8 million, which of course as you said is the 1 million points mark.
Nice to see you active again Icarus.
