Both have produced decidedly average games since the end of the '64.

Yeah, to be fair, Free Radical are pretty much the best of what Rare were.

Said it before but:

The relationship between Rare and Nintendo had basically broken down. Nintendo were faced with the choice of selling their shares or owning 49% of an empty shell as the employees walked out.

Yeah in looking back, it was 49% but it was $375 million. In today's money Nintendos cut was almost exactly £100 million. And I still think an on form Rare would have been worth at least that to Nintendo.

"Microsoft Buys Rare
Along with Perfect Dark and Banjo-Kazooie.
By IGN Staff
September 20, 2002—CNN Money is reporting that Seattle-based Microsoft has bought former Nintendo second-party Rare. The news comes on the heels of Nintendo's announcement yesterday that it had sold its 49-percent stake in the development studio.

"We sold our position back to Rare and then they sold the entire company to Microsoft," said George Harrison, senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications for Nintendo of America. "

and it was 375 million not 360.

Wasn't it 51%? Enough to hold the majority share I thought...

Just one point with regards to this thread - Nintendo didn't own Rare. They had a 25% or so stake. That means Nintendo "only" got £90 million or so, not the £360 million that Rare cost Microsoft. Put in perspective, an on form second party Rare would have been worth more to Nintendo than £90 million cash.

I'm really looking forward to Conker: Live & Reloaded.

I'm sure it was great, it just never appealed to me.

I'd rather play Roadrash 64 (which REALLY needs a new incarnation, preferably online).
