It's Mr Pants = mmmm mediocracy
It's been, what, four years since they released a game worth playing?

Makes sense to me. As previously stated I bought it for Goldeneye and the other 120-odd games I bought were a direct result of me purchasing the console for that one game.
The N64's image was boosted by the release of Goldeneye. Games that were released after sold more as so many people had the console. I'm not doubting the fact that Zelda was a huge success for Nintendo and yes that also helped shift masses of N64's.
But it was Goldeneye that put the N64 on the map! Thus my argument remains the same - it was the N64's saviour.
Mario 64 saved Nintendo because without it the launch would have been a disaster.
Perfect Dark saved Nintendo because it caused a late sales surge and more teenage popularity.
Zelda saved Nintendo because it made Christmas 1998 its own.
Acclaim saved Nintendo because they published loads of games far superior on the N64. Making it the choice for wrestling fans, dinosaur hunters and fans of adult adventure titles like Shadowman.
But sales rose after the release of Zelda and continued to rise till the release of Conker in 2001.
Goldeneye cannot be thanked for all of that.
Goldeneye made sure that Christmas 1997 wasn't a wash out for Nintendo. But Christmas 1998 belonged to Zelda (which consequently sold more) and after that Goldeneye was a distant memory.
It did keep N64 sales up. But it wouldn't have "saved" the N64. Goldeneye for example sold terribly in Japan.

Who the hell mentioned anything about Zelda?
Take away Goldeneye and I'm telling you, the N64 would've been dead by the end of 1998!
