It's already happening, security bots screening through forums at an alarming rate, emails getting intercepted... if you're doing nothing threatening though, you shouldn't really care about it.
As for the commercial aspect... well, you could always abandon the address. Not the end of the world.

The worry about gmail isn't what they are doing now, its what they might do in the future. The biggest criticism seems to be that the terms and condition are a little vague in certain areas and doesn't rule out an awful lot of things in the future.
Google essentially have all the tools to track you across the internet and build a profile of what things you tend to search for, what sites you visit and how often you visit them. And now they have gmail to not only help them do this further, but also as a medium to target you.
