Convicted rapist wins £7 million whilst on day release from his life sentence of...7 years? Doesn't sound much like a life sentence to me, but I'm sketchy on the law of this. Lucky bloke though - 7 year holiday, then gets a massive bundle of cash right near the end!

What are the chances, meh, meeeeeeh!?!

"He is serving life after being convicted of attempted rape in 1989"
I worked in oxfam the other week and they have a prisoner who comes in and works full time, met three of them now. All really nice fellows, anyhows got in to deep conservation with the last bloke he said he has a mint when he comes out. Due to the fact hes been locked up for six years but on day release can get a job and work full time. If they save rightly, which they sort of have to do as the prison service makes them save a small amount.

So by the time this guy is coming out hes got about 4 years wage in the bank. But of course this is not the same for everyone as they cant just go releasing any odd prisoner on to the community. But quite ironicly(sp) my neighbour is britains leading crimonologist. Explains that this does stop reoffending usually, but it costs over £25,000 a year to look after one prisoner. So they could say ok we will take 60% of what you earn. But taking money away from prisoners and can increase hatred of "the system". I belive that ALL prisoners should have the opportunity to earn money and be a benefit to the economy rather than a drain.

If he is in the penal system at the time of the win they should give the money to the legal system to spend improving themselves.

They do tend to give prisoners day release if they're exceptionally well behaved though - unless they have a history of biting.
