Convicted rapist wins £7 million whilst on day release from his life sentence of...7 years? Doesn't sound much like a life sentence to me, but I'm sketchy on the law of this. Lucky bloke though - 7 year holiday, then gets a massive bundle of cash right near the end!

What are the chances, meh, meeeeeeh!?!

Basically, when a life sentence is given, a tariff is also applied. The tariff is the minimum amount of time to be served. It is set by the trial judge, though it can be overruled by appeal judges, or the Home Secretary (though the latter won't apply for too much longer).

Once the tariff is served, the prisoner can be released on licence. However, as they're life term prisoners, if they commit any offence (ANY offence at all) they can be returned for the remainder of their life sentence.

In a nutshell, that's how it works.

He received a seven year sentence in 1983 which he obviously didn't serve in full as it was 1989 when he received life for attempted rape (again).

I can find no date for his release but ironically he has been sent back to a high security prison as he now has the funds to abscond.

I guess it depends on how you look at prison. This reminds me of a QotD I did ages ago, and the question was:

Is prison for punishment, or rehabilitation?

Foszy, how it is a benefit to the economy to have prisoners paid for doing work that they could be made to do for no payment? (Call it paying off their debt to society if you want).

It makes no actual sense, because they eventually spend that money but not all of it goes into the economy, whereas what they make can be sold and the profit from it far greater if the people making it are not paid anything.

Life itself is a prison sentence.

Please offer me some attractive alternatives.

I hold the liberal lefty view that prisoners should be treated correctly.

However, I also believe people should get harsher sentences and should work for their stay.

Go get them smashing rocks or something, good ol's slave labour.

So basically they're looking after them for free, and they have a bunch of work from their job waiting for them upon release?
