Convicted rapist wins £7 million whilst on day release from his life sentence of...7 years? Doesn't sound much like a life sentence to me, but I'm sketchy on the law of this. Lucky bloke though - 7 year holiday, then gets a massive bundle of cash right near the end!

What are the chances, meh, meeeeeeh!?!

I agree. The tabloids always point out the cost to the "tax payer" whenever prisoners are treated with some humainty. Last Easter, in one prison, all the inmates were given a Cadbury's cream egg at a cost of "£400" to the taxpayer.

Outrage!! No wonder crime levels are soaring; everyone wants the chance to get a FREE Cream egg when they are locked up. Of course I was suprised that none of the prisoners sued the Government for offending their beliefs. Kinder eggs would have been more appropriate and they prison bosses shold have put one file into every 500 eggs. Then the lags would have something to look forward too.

Better odds than winning the lottery and of course we all know that no prisoner will ever win that!!

So if I punch the air and walk towards you, and you don't move out the way and I hit you, it's your fault? Cool! We should meet up...

Stupid theory - you purposely put yourself in the position where you could not be responsible for your actions. You also failed to take any actions to prevent injury etc to those around you.

It's this kind of "not my fault, guv" culture that's screwed everything up.

Nah.
it's the same.
Lets so throwing knives at a wall was a crime.

I am throwing knives at a wall, blindfolded.
Someone happens to walk in front of that wall
I stab em in the head and kill them.
It's their fault, not mine.
If I get a sentence, it should be for thrwing knives.

That's my theory.

What in Gods name are you talking about?! They're not the exact same crime; in one, someone has been killed. In the other, they haven't. Ergo, not the same crime.

For something to be a crime one has to look at what the results of the endeavour were. If the result was that someone drove drunk, that is crime A. If someone drove drunk AND killed someone then that is crime B.

Here's what I don't get about what people think should constitute a life sentence.

If someone drinks, then drives, tehn kills someone on the road, people (Family of the victim) think they should get a life sentence.

But if someone drinks, and drives, but is just caught for speeding, that's really no different, so they should get a life sentence too.

The only diffrence is, there was someone standing in the way of the drink driver in situation A.

It's the exact same crime.
They're also treated as the exact same crime, but people moan.

Bleh.

I just have to laugh at this line though;

"Iorworth Hoare, 52, is near the end of a life sentence"

They should work, but not get paid for it.

Whatever they would 'earn' should go towards paying for their up-keep.

I think it's a valid point in some aspects but right-wing morons blow it all out of proportion.

OMG! Prisoners live in 5 star hotels and wash themselves with champagne and it costs £100,000 a year to keep them locked up!!!!!

But yeah

One thing that sometimes sits on my mind:

I went to uni, and for 3 years had to pay my way. I'll be paying back my student loan on top of normal tax for years.

Should it be the same way for criminals?
Should society be burdened with the cost of protecting ourselves, or should the offender have to pay for his upkeep as well as being locked up for years?
What if he gets 'rehabilitation' - if he's not paying for his imprisonment, should he pay for that?

I don't know, neither solution seems ideal.
