It's a niche title, it was never going to be a huge global hit because some would always find it dull/none-FPS-like. In terms of quality it's up there with Goldeneye, but not with appeal. And Goldeneye is harder that Prime, by the way.

I totally agree. I think Goldeneye is the best game of all time. Metroid Prime was too hard to appeal to people the way Goldeneye did. Probably it's biggest downfall was the sometimes insane difficulty level.
and if we're using Goldeneye as an example then Metroid Prime doesn't have a wide an appeal, so in that respect it falls short of being another Goldeneye. In others it doesn't.
