Is dangerously addictive, almost impossibly deep, and is a truly marvellous management spectacle.

It is also frustrating beyond words, often truly ridiculous and is a cause of premature mental instability.

Well I only bought 2 players...would that disrupt the whole team and make them lose to people like Crystal Palace and Southampton? Bit stupid if it does.

Well for my Wycombe team (in my 4th season now) I used a 4 4 2 in League 2. With one attacking mid going forward into the centre and a defensive mid coming back to sit infront of the back 4. My wingers would run up the wings and cross the ball into the box while the FB's would push up into the centre of the park if the wingers did this. Worked quite well as it got me into League 1 but then I had to change tactics and now I use a 4 4 2 diamond formation. Wingers run up the wing and cross the ball into the box while an attacking mid sits just behind the front 2 and provides them with some killer passes. My defensive mid keeps my back 4 protected :)

Ah, the legends. They bought Lee Clark for roughly 120 million, back in the day. How we laughed.

Also, about the "buy quality players then lose loads", it happens every game if you bring in three or four new players. For some reason, SI decided it takes them a variable ammount of time to settle in - and in general, their foreign, so (I think) if they don't speak the same language, they take a couple of months to start hitting some form.

Also, arrange about 5 frendlies before strengthening your squad. There are some real odd stats. Man Utd's Carrol is top drawer, unlike it real life (unfortunately). Although I was first at the time, I'd conceded about 11 and scored 28 at the start of January, but even so Carrol had saved three or four penalties, and won World Goalkeeper of The Year. I was weeeell chuffed.

(But I bought Frey anyway :P.)

But then Frey hit the most horrific form ever. And didn't stop... Kept him interchanged with Carrol for the rest of the season, but he let more in than Jordan, resulting in us finishing 2nd behind the almighty force that is Chelsea (+ Ballack), who succesfully destroyed United thrice during the season, once in the League, (the home match was 2-0 United) then twice in the FA Cup.

Boll*cks...

And I spent a load on O. Martins (£20m), but he, although he did hit form later on, spent his time missing from the six yard box. Have to check out Arfa later on though, Giggs is a bit... Old? And Ronaldo and Fletcher can't cut it in a 4-3-3 situation.

Ah well, it's not like it's over. I've spent a load on some bad signings, but still have around £15.5m after selling Howard to West Brom for £4.5m, so a rejuvenated United should pull through either in the 05/06 season or 06/07, but it seems the PC has cracked my 433 tactic, as well as my 422 diamond w/ runners. It's so annoying, after only one season and anyone can shake up my defence...

What tactics do you lot use anyway? I'm tempted to go 433 at home, with either the FB's making runs up the wings to cross and the MC's all holding / making attacking runs, and a more conservative 532 or 442 at home, 532 with FB's crossing, 442 with ML and MR doing it. Just depends on how my defenders / attacking midfielders turn out. I like spending around £200,000 on unknown players (stats in the 15/8 range, when under 20), and then seeing how they turn out. Often they can be most impressive - check out Bovo and Hangeland.

Lmao...the exact same thing happened to me. It was my first time on FM and I managed Arsenal, bought some quality players like you did and then started to lose loads. I was like wtf?! I got world class players and I've tried 2-3 different tactics...then I went down to something like 18th, went out of the champions league to UEFA cup then I started playing 5 in defence and got a few draws and managed to pull myself back up to 12th...but then it was too late and the board fired me :( I still have no idea what I did wrong...it might be a bug in the game with Arsenal or something because it has never happened to me ever again.

Lol...DMC = Defensive Midfielder Center....he's a defensive midfielder that plays best in the centre :P AMC = Attacking Midfielder Centre :P

This game is so frustrating at times. About 2 hours ago I started with Arsenal and bought so quality players (Kaka, Seedorf, Nesta, Adriano and Pirlo) and I was like "yes, im indistructable!", but then I got beaten by Chalton, Chelsea AND Aston Villa.

I just don't know what to do now, maybe I need to change my formation, I have two of the best strikers in this game and have only managed to win one match against Man City (6-0).

Pirlo is my best player at the moment, scored 3 goals against Man City and assisted 2. He's a DMC, does this mean he'd be better as a MC or a DC? I think I have my players in crap positions, thats why they're not playing good.

I've got a decent defence as well (Nesta, Ashley Cole, Touré and Lauren).

Oh and I managed to get Dida for free and still I lose 3 games in a row. Im 17th now, might get relegated if I dont change my tactics soon...

Nope.

Strangely enough his contract wasn't protected and he refused to sign new contracts and then said he wanted to leave. He then won world player, world footballer, world attacker, english player and european forward in Jan/Feb and I got a bid for £31.5m + £135 for 50 league appearances. I cut that down to 20 apps.

Oh, it was from Moneybags Madrid.

Heh, that was my favourite tactic when I was 9.

Oh Arsenal, you think you can beat Fulham? What about if you don't have a keeper on the pitch?

Hatem Ben Arfa.

Signed him on a bosman following my third season in carge at Anfield/New Anfield, mainly to act as a back/cover player for the excellent but injury-prone/away on duty Harry Kewell...

My God, what a player he turned out to be!!

Just finished my fourth season with Liverpool, and in each game he played, only ONCE did he recieve a rating of lower than 8!
For all the games he played, he recieved Man of the Match awards for more than HALF of them!
Easily gets a nine of a ten in any game - even when the team's playing badly!

He only managed 3 goals this season, but he was playing left wing. Never played him upfront - sold Baros to WIGAN for £6m; couldn't retain the Champs. League or FA Cup - Chelsea got the double.
Laurent Robert turned into a great one-year freebie when Newcstle didn't want him, but Ben Arfa is truly something else!

And to think, at one point, I was worried when began the season only to find Kewell would be out 'til Christmas!

Keep 'em peeled! ;D
