It makes sense in the grand scheme of things. Not that it's the ONLY source of depression, just one of the causes of a modern version.
The basic gist was that back in the old days people heard news and were affected by things that were immediate. What he meant was that all the news you heard was news that was relevant to you, ie: from your neighbourhood, and you could actually do something about it. You could affect the world and it could affect you back.
What happens now is that we receive so much news from around the world, half of it irrelevant to us, or at least something we can do nothing about. You can hear about a coach crash on the other side of the world, but there's not much you can do about it, at least not immediately. Therefore, we find ourselves getting depressed and our whole sense of the effect we have on the world has dimmed, so we end up getting upset by some made up character in a soap or by a film and not giving a damn about someone nearer to home. Which is all pretty depressing in itself really, though at least there's an answer for some of the depression around these days.
