Are speed cameras the only sensible way to get drivers to go slower?

Lets face it, speed bumps are a right pain in the buttocks. So are cameras, but they work.

The only reason they work, is that people don't like to part with money. So fining people every time they're caught speeding would be a good way to slow them down, yes?

Thoughts?

No, it's not at all.

I don't follow people real close, I leave a sensible gap, much bigger than most I see on the road. The reason for this is I hate it when people drive right up my bum, so I don't do it to others.

The way I see it is as long as the gap between you and the car in front is big enough, it doesn't matter how fast you're going, as you've always got space to slow down.

This only applies to motorways obviously, as on other roads there are people crossing etc...

Because that's the law. I don't need any more reason than that.

I drive over the limit sometimes, because I want to get somewhere.

When one a motorway on the way back from somewhere, why should I limit myself to 70mph when the weather is good and the road is clear? So I don't, I drive at well above that because it gets me home quicker. Plain and simple.

I'll never speed when I pass because I'm a good boy.

However, there is one road which is very hard to stay at 30. You come off a dual carriageway and down the steepest, longest hill in history.

You need to keep your foot on the brake

I've always wondered why they make cars that can do 100+ MPH if the maximum limit in the entire country (and most of the world!) is 70.

Hmm as I am unable to drive currently, due to the lack of years passing since my birth, I can't really say why it is that people feel the need to go so fast, or why it is they have problems with slowing down.

I get the impression that a lot of people know/think that speed cameras are just there to scare people. However my parents both know where nearly every camera is, so they simply just slow down as they pass it, and then speed back up again. So is it really that effective?

With all this money m'larky, well I don't have much, so I would really not want to have to waste it paying off fines for driving too quickly. But yeah I can't drive so i'm invalid, well my opinion is....

Erm how reliable are these camera's and fee setting devices/people? My mum was charged like £40 or something, actually maybe it was more or less, for being in the congestion zone without paying the charge. Her car was "seen" by camera at 3:41 pm on a Wednesday. Now that's funny, because at 3:45 she was picking my sister up from school in the suburbs of north london. My father wrote a "kind" letter explaining this, and demanding compensation for the postage costs (that it cost him to send this letter saying she wasnt in the zone) and also attempting to claim £40 compensation for incorrectly fining someone and suggesting a tribunal.

However in that longish answer, I apologise guys, because I have kind of failed in answering "YH QotD."

Yes

The worst traffic calming thing I've ever come across was a bump. But it was at a junction so you had to balance the car on it. If you went to far you'd roll on the road and die. If not enough then your back wheels would get caught and it would take a lot of acceleration to get free and then you'd fly round the corner.

Pointless, dangerous and on my test route.
