Are speed cameras the only sensible way to get drivers to go slower?

Lets face it, speed bumps are a right pain in the buttocks. So are cameras, but they work.

The only reason they work, is that people don't like to part with money. So fining people every time they're caught speeding would be a good way to slow them down, yes?

Thoughts?

The speed limits exist because they either reduce the liklihood of a fatality arising through impact to either a pedestrian or road user. If you crash into a wall going at 70 mph you are approx 10 times less likely to be boogered than if you were travelling at 75 mph. Every increment over the limit multiplies your liklihood to be boogered in a crash.

One speed camera in my local area made the paper because it raised £20,000 a day, the most in the entire country!

they're really only used to generate revenue anyways.
people simply slow down for them then speed up again afterwards unfortunately :(

the worst people are, like E_B says, the ones who insist on slamming on the anchors and c r a w l i n g past them. why?!?!?!?!
"if i speed through one i get a nasty letter saying what a bad driver i am, so maybe by driving past them at 10 miles per hour, the camera operators will say 'my, what a considerate and safe person' and send me a congratulatory letter instead"

jackasses.

I know, it's just a game, when they hide them in the bushes.

The area they slow down is the 10-metre stretch on the road with the white markings. The front of the school is far longer than that. It doesn't work.

Big deal. I don't have a problem with them being hidden if that were the policy, is all I'm stating.

It does, because people will be going slower outside the school. Therefore the cameras do their job.

It was a goverment ruling made some time ago, Pandaemonium, hence all the speed cameras should now be a bright yellow colour.

Why? If you are sticking to the speed limit, you have nothing to worry about. A place I know outside of a school has highly visible cameras. All that happens is people slow down while they pass the camera, then immediately speed up. It doesn't work.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
