If a foetus has a serious genetic defect (its life will be comprised of sitting in a chair and drooling) do you think a compulsory abortion should take place?

Timmargh, do you think aborting healthy babies should be legal?

Are you also dead set against abortion in this instance? Just out of curiosity do you know anyone who has had a miscarriage or abortion. The distress caused to the mother can be equal in both cases.

It is not a cop-out but an informed decision. One that you, and only you, could make one way or the other.

*steps into the ring, so to speak*

When my mother was pregnant with me she caught German measles. The doctors gave her the option to have an abortion as they said I could be affected by her ill health. Obviously, she decided against it.

11 years after being born I was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy which is a genetic condition usually passed on from a parent. However, as neither of my parents, their parents or my siblings have muscular dystrophy then they concluded that it was the result of a genetic mutation, possibly brought on by the German measles.

Were my parents right to refuse the abortion? Opinions may differ, but their reasons were: a) there was no way of knowing for sure that I would be affected, and b) they were prepared to do whatever it took to bring me up as normally as possible.

Personally, I'm rather glad that I wasn't aborted (!), but then again I consider myself incredibly lucky that I have a relatively normal life - I have an active mind and plenty of aids and assistance to help me with my day-to-day existence.

I have made a conscious decision not to have kids (snip!) as there is a 50% chance that any child I father would have muscular dystrophy, too. As a result of this, I haven't formed an opinion on abortion as it's not a decision I would ever have to face. You may think that's a cop-out but, frankly, I don't care.

Right Ashman, I am personally dead against abortion, except if the baby or mother will not survive. The methods use to kill babies in this day and age are absolutely appaling, the babies are not even given painkillers, just expected to cope with this gruesome death, at only a few months old. Did you know in current UK law, if you were to have your baby aborted in the last available week (about week 26) the baby could actually survive if it were to be released via pregnancy?

The truth is very few abortions are for the reasons of either rape or the mother or baby will die. Some, yes, but the majority of abortions are because the mother "can't cope". Is killing a perfectly healthy baby a fair way for the mother to relieve herself?
