I just downloaded KNOPPIX Linux ( http://knoppix.com/ ) (bootable CD version of Linux) and just wrote it to CD and tried it out. I was really impressed, and bar it being a bit slow due to reading from the CD drive rather than a HD it was great. I was so impressed that when I get a new pc this one will become a Linux pc for stuff like web browsing, and the new will become a Gaming PC (unfortunatly having to run windows).
Whats everyone elses opion of Linux then?
Me = Geek.
So shoot me, sucker :P
I did a Stage 1 install :P

You have no idea how nerdish that sounds
Now distro wise, I use a distrubution named "Gentoo" (http://www.gentoo.org), which, although it's quite difficult to install (you load up the disc, and you get a commandline, thats it) it's definatly worth the time and effort. After the install, I had some experiance of the most basic Linux commands, so I knew what I wanted to do. Gentoo is a compile-from-source distro (rather then a binary distro, e.g mandrake), meaning you get given the source code, and you leave it to compile. I did a Stage 1 install :P
(I'm going to plug this even more now)...Gentoo also features a brilliant thing called "portage". Imagine a database that has a list of (nearly) every application thats available, and if you want to find something, it'll be in that database. Thats what portage is, you go search for what program you want, then just type the most simplest command known to man: -
emerge
And say if that program needs some dependencys (other things to make it work), portage will download+compile them automatically aswell!
[/plug]
Anyway, yes, Linux is indeed impressive, and to be uber geeky, here's a sceenshot of my wicked desktop :P
