Hay all,
I just downloaded KNOPPIX Linux ( http://knoppix.com/ ) (bootable CD version of Linux) and just wrote it to CD and tried it out. I was really impressed, and bar it being a bit slow due to reading from the CD drive rather than a HD it was great. I was so impressed that when I get a new pc this one will become a Linux pc for stuff like web browsing, and the new will become a Gaming PC (unfortunatly having to run windows).

Whats everyone elses opion of Linux then?

Blah, I was completely lost for the first few weeks I've had it, most of the time just looking at source code and seeing what did what. It helps if you've already been taught the background though, obviously.

It's not actually going to be as tough as you might think :D

Because I'm at the uni Dr Henry Fortuna has already set up a website with tutorials to get the thing running at:

http://www.hsfortuna.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/

So, getting things done should be easy enough, and the uni library has a book called See MIPS Run which is a textbook on assembly programming for MIPS processors, and covers the MIPS 5000 series processor in the PS2.

So, it wont be as hard as you might think, and my knowledge of the PSX platform will stand me in good stead for upgrading to the PS2. Entirely different world as the Net Yaroze library covers everything you might need to know to get it to work, but I already know the maths involved, I just need to learn how to move data effectively in the PS2 using paths 1 & 2 in cooperation with the DMAC.

Well I can tell you first hand that you're in for a rough ride. Manuals alone took a while to understand. Enjoy :D

I am studying a degree in computer games technology, mainly in 3D graphics, 3D math and physics.

We've looked at the PS1 Net Yaroze, PCs under DX9 and OpenGL 1.*, so now I've got my hand on my very own PS2 linux kit. If you are a student, or connected to an educational esablishment in any way you can buy the thing for £85 just now, well, 130 euros roughly exchanged :D

So, I'm about to get stuck into PS2 programming for linux, you get full control over the VU units, GS system, and even the data paths through the architecture, so learning how to code on the PS2 should be damn good fun :D

Lots of caffiene and sugar probably needed for all the late nights coming up soon though.

I'm about to buy the PS2 linux kit so I can make a game on the PS2 for my portfolio, so I'll let you know what I think of linux once I get my hands on the kit :D

Well, as my "forum" name suggests, i'm a gamesfreak. Linux doesn't really have that much game support, and the ATI graphics card drivers are pretty rubbish. So basically I felt that Windows would be a better alternative for what I wanted.

But if you are installing a linux on an old machine (for basic stuff like internet browsing/word processing etc), It's a superb alternative to windows.
