Production costs don't really come into it. Take CBFD on the N64....£60 rrp, for a cartridge that only cost £8 more to make. Nintendo have been griped at for years for the cost of their games. They've always tried to have as large a margin between manufacturing cost and RRP as they can, and Ninty's have carried on paying the prices.

We can currently buy PS2 and DC games at an average of £12.50 less per game than we can for the N64. Do you think Nintendo are really going to lower their profit margins? No, I don't. The GC will be SO expensive to produce that they'll have to continue upping their retail prices, because those Ninty executive cashmere suits and silk ties aren't cheap you know.

My views on vivisection are a side-issue, if I wished to express how I feel about cutting up little furry animals I'll quite happily post them in the LIG forum. (I'm all for it; furry animals, however cute, can be put to better use than just being stroked. I have better things to stroke.) Vivisection is just a well established scientific practice that could be better off if it was supplied with Nintys as subjects instead of furry animals. The furry animals could then be used to beta test Ninty games, as they are more intelligent on average and play games better. A fair swop, I'm sure you'll agree.

That was an anti-american advert paid for by Nintendo. Their dubious business practices have come to light again, as per usuall. Nintendo are still a bit sore over the last couple of bombs that America dropped on Japan, and have never forgiven them for that in truth. So Bill is now their scapegoat. I expect they are currently building up a huge fleet of Kamikazee pilots to go and do a Pearl Harbour on Bill Gates' lakeside mansion as we speak, the cost of which, by the way, will once again be passed on to the games developers and thence onto the Ninty.

Tell me why the Gamecube is crap.

'Crap' is not the word.

Nintendo have undoubtedly produced what will become a shrine for Nintys today. Basically because it is better than the N64, and no other reason.

But.... :-)

1) It's made by Nintendo, who I hate due to their corporate ideology, their image in the industry, the fact that their name begins with the letter N and ends with the letter O, and you can make an anagram out of the whole name like:

No indent or Neon dint

2) If I bought a Gamecube, I would then put myself in the position of being labelled a 'Ninty'. The average Ninty is a foul mouthed critter, abusive to other gamers, with the intellect of a 12 year old. All Nintys should be classed as having a genetic disorder and thus either culled or used in vivisection experiments, with no anesthetic. They are the lowest caste of gamer, and should be shunned appropriately.

3) The Gamecube is not actually a cube, which in point of fact is a square sided prism with all sides equal. If they can get the cube bit wrong, they can get the game bit wrong as well, a disturbing thought indeed. This kind of misrepresentation could land Nintendo in a lot of trouble in the future, with lawsuits and other legal cases being brought against them from many disillusioned gamers.

4) The power lead. It's the wrong shape. Its cross-sectional area is disproportionate to the gross milk yield in tonnes of your average household cat, which is always a bad sign. Until they change this, the performance of the Gamecube will always suffer.

5) Mario games will appear on the Gamecube. Mario is the anti-Christ of gaming characters, and being a religious gamer I do not wish to be associated with any console that uses Mario or his brother, Luigi (a demon if ever there was one), to promote itself. It's just not right. 2000 years ago they'd have taken the Gamecube and nailed it to a cross whilst singing 'Always look on the bright side of life'. If it happened before, it could happen again.

6) I can't pop a music CD in it and play it at will. This is a bad thing. Nintendo have gone for the anti-pirate format CD, which will cost more to tool up and manufacture, and this cost will once again be pushed onto developers and from there onto gamers. Why pay £45 for a game when I can get one for the X-Box for £30? And why lose out on the essential feature of being able to shoot people along to Eminem rather than have to listen to the programmers interpretation of what good slaughtering music should sound like? It's not for me.

7) The Gamecube has a handle. This doesn't come as an option, you HAVE to have it. I disagree with having unwanted extras on a console. The only purpose for this handle is to make it easier for you to pick up the console and fling it out of the window, which many will do when they discover that they can't play normal CD's on it.

8) The Gamecube will have kiddy cartoony graphics. Even if Nintendo brought out a 500-zillion bit console, it would have muddy, kiddy, cartoony graphics. I refuse to pay for a console that takes me back to the dark ages of gaming history (i.e. playing chess in the pitch dark in medieval Britain).

9) The Gamecube is too much like the Dreamcast. Sega brought out the Saturn as the next big thing after the Megadrive, but it flopped because it wasn't such a big leap in gaming progress. Nintendo brought out the N64, which compared to the SNES WAS a great leap, so it sold better. Sega then brought out the 128-bit Dreamcast, which then WAS a great leap compared to the Saturn. Now Nintendo want to play catchup again, and have released a console that, compared with the N64, is like comparing the Dreamcast to the Saturn, not a great leap. So many Nintys will be let down by this. But who cares? They're Nintys.

10) Why should I bother buying Gamecube when X-Box is just around the corner? I have a 128-bit Dreamcast with a back catalogue of great games which in my lifetime I will never get the time to play, because there are just too many good ones to choose from. The X-Box is the future of gaming. It's got Bill Gates behind it, and Bill is my kind of nerd. It will have more financial backing than Nintendo, who will probably go to the wall after the X-Box launch. And because everyone hates Nintendo so much, no one will want them to develop games for them either, so Nintendo will be stuck with the GBA, which won't be a lot of good because the Gamecube won't be around for it to link up to. Sure, I could buy a Gamecube to last me till the X-Box comes along, but it's an expensive quick fix when I've already got a DC, and the games are way too expensive anyway. I'll wait for the X-Box.

This 10 point analysis of the Gamecube was brought to you by FantasyMeister, who's views are subject to change, except when it comes to:

Nintendo/Nes/Snes/Gameboy/N64/Gameboy Colour/Gamecube/GBA.
