On Saturday, a childhood hero of mine - David Rocastle - died of a form of cancer. He was 33.

My best friend's dad also died from cancer a few years ago.

I also fear cancer because, though I've never smoked, I grew up with two parents who were heavy smokers; my mum has since given up, but my dad continues to smoke reasonably heavily.

Now all of us with PC's or Mac's have a chance to assist in finding a cure for this disease.

Go to this URL:

http://members.ud.com /vypc/cancer/

(remember to remove the space)

...and download the software. It runs in your computer's spare cycles and analyses potential cures for cancer.

All other relevant info can be found on the site.

If anyone is interested in joining it, I have created a team called 'Special Reserve Forum Regulars'.

At the moment it all seems to be down, but they did say earlier that they were expecting some down time due to the stress-testing of the network.

I also think the site is getting pretty well hammered! Another TWO pages of teams appeared within 30 minutes of me setting up the SR team!

Might be worth waiting until tomorrow.

At home (don't think they have a computer down the paper shop), and no firewall i know about. I'll just try leaving it for a while, and see what happens.

I don't think anything is happening, though.

MC - are you installing at home or at work? And are you behind a firewall?

I installed at work, and had to fiddle with the firewall/proxy settings for a few minutes. It did *appear* to freeze, but it was actually working - took one or two minutes, and that was over a leased line connection!

Hopefully it is because of the testing that they are doing on their system (see my previous post) and will speed up once they've got it sorted. Please don't give up!

I have downloaded it, installed it, but I can't register. The program just sort of freezes. I have somehow posted in the forums using my name 'Jagged Little Pill', but it won't let me into the member site.

ANy advice?
